UK V Gt Britain & N Ireland
Not for the first time, a BBC commentator was moaning about the mouthful, that is our Olympic team, Great Britain & Northern Ireland. He wants to call us the UK. Can you imagine the Constitutional uproar if that happened? Plus we would lose a Gold Medallist from our Olympic team. The commentators should realise the Olympics are all about Politics. Ever wondered why Gibraltar never features in the " Olympic Brotherhood "?

I think it's one of those things that's always more complicate than I realise, but I don't really care that much and usually just default to what is depicted in this map.

Real Al:-Aren't UK and GB & NI the same thing?
Which medalist would we lose?
UK doesn't include IOM & Channel Isles. Mark Cavendish come from IOM. IN 2012 when I watched the men's cycle race, I wondered what the IOM flags were all about. Also some Channel Isles swimmers have been up to Olympic standard. Also Spain continues to block Gibraltar entry to the Olympics.

To clear all this up and be inclusive to people from all Isles under our dominion like Bermuda and Anguilla we should just call the team “The British Empire”

Re: UK V Gt Britain & N Ireland
But IOM isn't part of GB either. The British Olympic Association represents IOM, Channel islands etc. which aren't part of GB & NI, so I don't see why they can't just rebrand as Team UK. It's not technically correct, but neither is Team GBFriend or faux wrote: ↑Sun Aug 04, 2024 12:50 pm Real Al:-Aren't UK and GB & NI the same thing?

Whilst from IOM, Mark Cavendish won a Silver medal for Great Britain in the 2016 Olympics.Real Al wrote: ↑Sun Aug 04, 2024 1:06 pmBut IOM isn't part of GB either.
