Charity is a cold grey loveless thing. If a rich man wants to help the poor, he should pay his taxes gladly, not dole out money at a whim.

Re: Labour Watch
Yes that was amusing. In the years used to calculate the covid money I had been putting in the hours to finance some Euro road trips so I was quids in when it came to getting the free money. Basically funded a deposit for daughters first house.one o in huntingdon wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 5:53 pmCheered me up no end when all the tax evaders got squat during the Covid crisis.Max B Gold wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 5:49 pm Charity is a cold grey loveless thing. Re: Labour Watch
Seems to me that Reeves is into bluster big time, presenting as outraged about the Tory party destruction while in charge but then imposes measures to make the 'just about managing' pay more. Withdrawing the winter fuel allowance just because the rules said that the obscenely rich were also eligible, shows that she has very little awareness or care of the reality for millions of people who will now genuinely struggle with fuel bills.

Its not only the obscenely rich who didn't need it, totally wasted on so many retired people of pension ageE10EU wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2024 12:44 am Seems to me that Reeves is into bluster big time, presenting as outraged about the Tory party destruction while in charge but then imposes measures to make the 'just about managing' pay more. in fact a lot of pensioners didn't need it either, an awful lot are doing rather nicely
Its generally known as "Christmas Money" by a large amount of older people and i've heard it described as that numerous times.
Millions will not struggle over the loss of 200 quid a year, inflation busting pension increase of 8.5% is nearly five times that amount.
The old of which I am one have done somewhat better than the current younger generation especially private pension wise.
Many will now have to work until they are nearly seventy and others have little or no chance of owning their own home.
My generation also had free university education available or decent apprenticeship schemes with proper work contracts.
Many youngsters gave up a lot to help the aged during Covid, doesn't hurt the old for once to give something back.

It's a bit ironic that the folk that have never bothered to pay into a pension, will be the ones getting the handout.Long slender neck wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2024 8:58 pm Seems to be a lot of old folk who never bothered to pay into a pension and expect a handout

Re: Labour Watch
I wonder if this is the most challenging start a new government has had for quite a while.
Riots, prisons full, MPs rebelling in the first few weeks, reducing benefits for pensioners, doctors strike, GPs strike…etc

Re: Labour Watch
Exactly . Why bother working hard all your life and saving a bit of money . Might as well blow it all on wine , women and song . Then when you get to old age somebody else ( mug ) can pay to look after you .Chelmsford Swimmer wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2024 9:02 pmIt's a bit ironic that the folk that have never bothered to pay into a pension, will be the ones getting the handout.Long slender neck wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2024 8:58 pm Seems to be a lot of old folk who never bothered to pay into a pension and expect a handout

Re: Labour Watch
While in opposition Labour could talk the talk . Now they are in government they have to walk the walk . So far things don't look very promising .

Re: Labour Watch
It actually blows my mind that people will actually say out loud that they believe that far right rioting in August is the fault of the Labour Party who have been in power for a month.
It seems that part of the argument actually comprises “they shouldn’t have got in power then the far righties wouldn’t have been provoked!”

How long do they have to be in power for until we can stop auto-blaming the Tories and start blaming the people running the country?

Re: Labour Watch
Well the Tories were still blaming Labour for "there's no money left" and the state of the Economy up to last year at least, so shall we say 13 years ?Currywurst and Chips wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2024 7:54 pmJust so I know the rules for the future….CEB2ElectricBoogaloo wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2024 7:45 pm It actually blows my mind that people will actually say out loud that they believe that far right rioting in August is the fault of the Labour Party who have been in power for a month.
