Orient summer transfer window 2024: a summary
Players out
1. Sol Brynn (GK)
2. Idris El Mizouni (MID)
3. Shaq Forde (FW)
4. Daniel Abu-Adjei (FW)
5. Khayon Edwards (FW)
6. Adam Thompson (CB)
7. Rob Hunt (RB)
8. Ruel Sotiriou (FW)
9. Max Sanders (MID)
10. Joe Piggot (FW)
Players in
1. Charlie Kelman (FW)
2. Sonny Perkins (FW)
3. Diallang Jaiyesimi (FW)
4. Lewis Warrington (MID)
In terms of raw numbers we’ve lost 10 players and bought in 4. So there’s 6 players who simply have no replacement yet. Considering that lack of squad depth knackered us last season that’s not a good start.
Now let’s look at who has been replaced by who.
Sotiriou was the club top scorer last season with 11 goals. Assuming Kelman is his direct replacement, Kelman scored 3 goals in league 1 last season. Unless he has suddenly turned into a goal machine we’ve lost our main single source of goals (who was hardly a goal machine in the first place).
Sonny Perkins, a kid who has barely played professional football. He replaces one of the two kids who had barely played professional football we had last season. Both were useless. So we’ve replaced two inexperienced kids with one inexperienced kid.
El Miz. Most important player in the squad. Warrington presumably his replacement. Has potential to be an equal replacement so will give this one benefit of the doubt.
Diallang Jaiyesimi a bloke who has never scored more than 4 league goals in a single season. Not really sure who he replaces. If it’s Shaq Forde then this is a big downgrade. Forde scored 9 league goals last season.
That leaves Brynn, Thompson, Hunt, Sanders, Piggott and one of the loanee kids with no replacement whatsoever at present. Thompson you can forgive as he was on loan last season and CB is the one position we have plenty of cover for.
Not adding depth by replacing Hunt will be negligent
Not signing an adequate first team GK will be criminal.
Not replacing the 10+ goals we lose from letting Sotiriou could genuinely put us in a relegation battle.

Re: Orient summer transfer window 2024: a summary
Also for context of the below, the two inexperienced kids were a cop out last minute signing to replace a senior pro (Drinan) so if you skip the middle men we've swapped a permanent senior pro ST for a loan youth with no experience
Just reading the RW interview notes, looks like the 2 incoming signings has gone down to 1
https://www.leytonorient.com/news/2024/ ... transfers/
As has been said all along at least 5 players short and they all need to be players that go straight into the first XI, not squad filler.Sonny Perkins, a kid who has barely played professional football. On transfers…
We’re definitely hoping to have one new player in before we head to Spain. As I have said, that week is a really important one in terms of integrating new players into the squad, so we really want them in before we go away.

Re: Orient summer transfer window 2024: a summary
Agree with all of this . I’m sure RW must see it as well. He is ambitious and he knows he is currently well short of a strong squad, as it stands.
We need another quality striker and a quality midfielder and the defenders for cover. We probably need a little bit of experience in the squad as it’s all very young . Isn’t DJ to temp replace Theo ? Forde hasn’t been replaced neither has piggot. Has our budget been reduced ? Because of stadium costs? We’ve had no star signing yet , all a little unproven with hope

Could be argued DJ replaces Forde, a winger / striker hybrid with enough physical presence to be a nuisance.Norlington Road wrote: ↑Sat Jul 20, 2024 7:09 pm Agree with all of this . That's a gamble with pretty poor odds given you've got our two most injured players from last season in there. With no equivalent cover for Agyei the danger of overplaying him and then losing him for weeks on end as a result is very much still thereBergen wrote: ↑Sat Jul 20, 2024 7:06 pmI dont`t agree. The three things that really stand out to me as being unacceptable are:
1. Not signing an adequate GK
2. Having an even worse squad depth than last season when that was one of the main reasons we ran out of steam
3. Losing our top scorer and failing to replace him
If Agyei gets injured we are properly f*cked. It would be quite unbelievable if at least 4 first team standard players are not signed before we kick off against Bolton.

I would also add starting Sweeney at LB is equally criminal given he wasn't even wanted in the squad for most of last season

This is the main problem with having a short squad - the players are over used.

Re: Orient summer transfer window 2024: a summary
Sotiriou was hardly prolific. As I have mentioned and I think most would agree, Ruel scored what he did due to injuries to others in that position and getting the games he did. If Agyei was fit Ruel would have not played in that role and most likely ended up with his usual 6-7 per season. The Reverend wrote: ↑Sat Jul 20, 2024 6:40 pm Players out

Goals will come I feel as they do from the middle of the park and with O’Neil in form this will be fine.
El Miz was also a gamble, couldn’t get into an Ipswich league 1 squad and had to drop to league 2. We will find another and as you said Watkins could be that new pin up.
We need a decent LB and goalie, IMO if these are not found soon this is will be our down fall. Howes is a back up and nothing more. The one strength he has is he knows the squad but not playing at this level for long is a worry. Just for the record I was worried when we had Sol between the sticks too. Big gamble that nearly never paid off.

Being generous that Warrington will be the player for us that El Miz was. I mean, he might yeah, but he won’t will he. El Miz was a star. Our transfer activity so far is bordering on atrocious.

Did you really expect us to be able to replace a half million pound player with someone just as good. Who do you suggest we should have got instead of Warrington that we could afford ?

Re: Orient summer transfer window 2024: a summary
I was trying to give the benefit of the doubt. We didn’t know much about El Miz when he first came. My point is that even if Warrington is as good as El Miz (and that’s a BIG if) the squad is still considerably weaker.
The lack of transfer activity is bad enough but the likes to Travis and Wellens putting out messages how many players are coming in which don’t materialise and then suddenly the number is lower than what was said a few days previously is really poor. I’d rather they don’t say anything than fob fans off with false promises.
There is absolutely no way on earth Wellens is satisfied with the squad as it is.

- get the business done early
- get the players in for the first few weeks of fitness work
- get the squad together for Spain bonding trip
- have a settled starting XI ready for the first game
- have a full depth squad by end of the window
Missed the first two and it seems only one more coming before the Spain trip. Still 4 more left to bring in since RW made his statement about 5 players being required.
We have away the first 4 weeks of the season last year and ultimately that was the difference for a playoff spot. It'll be much tougher this season so got to hit the ground running, that's just the reality of the league without teams starting on minus points.
Correct, CB is one area we get did sorted early doors

Maybe some of the players we are targeting are being assessed by their parent clubs and were here last season.
That’s why there appears to be a lack of panic from the club.

Atrocious that’s an understatement dogs, even the happy clappers have to admit that. Looks to me that Wellens has joined the Ling “ let’s take the piss out of the supporters society “ and looking at the Rev’s calculations we are in the deep poo poo. Even if we sign players, there’s no pre season no bonding and worse of all,no full bloody squad to start the season with. But we have a few more seats

Re: Orient summer transfer window 2024: a summary
Out of the 10 players in the list, 5 players were ‘bit ‘ players,
Edwards, Adu Ajei, Sanders, Thompson, Pigott, so is there that much of a problem?
Yes, we ned GK, full back but other than that the basis of the squad is there.
We can’t afford a massive deep squad so have to do the best we can and hope injuries don’t hit us too hard
