This match took place on 20 Feb 1965, so back in those day at that time of the year, well many football pitches in the UK were in much the same condition and back in the 50s and 60s all being played with a heavy muddy and often misshapen ''Dubbin ball'' that came with a crudely laced up opening to a rubber tube where you blew the ball up, from memory I think the tube had to be folded over to stop the rubber bladder from leaking out air then bound up with some string !Well head that ball and get the leather lace across your forehead and a get a ringing head and sometimes a cut forehead, little wonder that so many of the older players ended up with brain injuries when they got older. One very muddy pitch many years ago was the now gone ''Derby County Baseball ground'' which was often featured on match of the day when Brian Clough was their manager ! Yes well remember when I changed from playing boys football with the smaller football to mens football, I could barely kick that heavy rain sodden big football more than 20 yards, it was like kicking a lead weight about.
And if you headed the frigging thing and caught the full lace on your forehead, it looked like someone had crocheted your head !
