Remember standing in the west stand when he scored all four goals in a 4-2 victory over Bristol City.

Good grief, the state of that pitch. How was that game ever allowed to be played?
RIP Joe

It was a different world back then . I remember a Man City V West Ham game in which Jimmy Greaves played and the pitch was just a mud pat . RIP Joe .Chicken Dhansak wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 1:00 pm Good grief, the state of that pitch. How was that game ever allowed to be played?

By far the worst league ground, at that time, was the Racecoarse Ground of Derby County.RedDwarf 1881 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 1:35 pmIt was a different world back then . Because the boots were actual boots and the players a lot tougher than today's breed.Chicken Dhansak wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 1:00 pm Good grief, the state of that pitch. How was that game ever allowed to be played?

Re: R.I.P Joe Elwood
This match took place on 20 Feb 1965, so back in those day at that time of the year, well many football pitches in the UK were in much the same condition and back in the 50s and 60s all being played with a heavy muddy and often misshapen ''Dubbin ball'' that came with a crudely laced up opening to a rubber tube where you blew the ball up, from memory I think the tube had to be folded over to stop the rubber bladder from leaking out air then bound up with some string !Well head that ball and get the leather lace across your forehead and a get a ringing head and sometimes a cut forehead, little wonder that so many of the older players ended up with brain injuries when they got older. One very muddy pitch many years ago was the now gone ''Derby County Baseball ground'' which was often featured on match of the day when Brian Clough was their manager ! Yes well remember when I changed from playing boys football with the smaller football to mens football, I could barely kick that heavy rain sodden big football more than 20 yards, it was like kicking a lead weight about.Chicken Dhansak wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 1:00 pm Good grief, the state of that pitch. And if you headed the frigging thing and caught the full lace on your forehead, it looked like someone had crocheted your head !

Funny, I did not see your earlier comment about the baseball ground and just mentioned it from my memory of those times in my previous comment !

Recall his daughter Christine who was in my year at St Mary's and then Cardinal Wiseman Junior School
They were a nice family
Sorry to learn about Joe passing away
