So whoever comes 4th will have a min of 3 points but will, presumably, not qualify as one of the best 3rd - even if a team with just 2 points makes it? OR have I got that massively wrong?

What about if we finish 3rd?
Depending on the draw, we'd play the winner of either Group E (f*ck knows, but possibly Belgium) or F (probably Portugal) in the next round. if we don't fancy our chance of winning tonight, we may want to try and f*ck things up so badly that we somehow end up in 3rd place.

Good point. If that was to happen that would be mad.

It’s possible for the 4th place team to have 4 points

Most teams play inverted wingers these days, the point of having full backs play on their natural foots side is that you get width from their overlap whilst the inverted wingers cuts in. You've seen that tactic work for England time and time again, which makes it all the more baffling that Southgate didn't take any other left backs. It's been such a key part of our game.
Saka is a natural left footed player and earlier in his career at Arsenal he played as a left wing back, in recent England games in this tournament he has managed a few right footed crosses for the first time but normally he cuts inside to get on his stronger left foot. Most of the teams I have seen in this tournament have had wingers playing in traditional positions and whipping in crosses as they take on the fullbacks putting in crosses enabling them to cross with their strongest foot.

''Inverted wingers, also known as inside forwards, are attacking players who operate on the opposite side of their preferred foot. Traditionally, wingers would play on the same side as their dominant foot, aiming to deliver crosses into the box''

Watch Spain, Portugal, Germany, France, all the heavy hitters - that just isn't true. They all play with one or two wingers who cut in onto their stronger foot. Some teams play with a 3-5-2 with wing backs and may do this, but it isn't the norm at all, at international or club level.

Taking Saka out of his most effective position would be crackers.

He was very effective for Arsenal when he played on the left wing and nothing to stop from swapping him to the opposite wing in the actual game, many teams and players do that, e.g swap wings.

I like the square shaped structure of Colognes stadium, so much more character than the so called modern bowl type stadiums.

7 points from 9. Perfect, practical tournament performances to get through top of the group with a more favourable draw. Southgate is an expert.

Your maths are on a par with Southgates tactical awareness

Let's hope so. What an embarrassment to the British game getting held to a draw by a pub league team.
