Re: Euro 2024
I genuinely don't think we're negative by design. Our midfield is being set up horribly and so we wind up pulling further back because we can't keep the ball and can't play out from the back effectively. That is a huge tactical failure.
Playing Trent as a deep lying play maker then removing any chance of an out ball for him by playing two left sided players who constantly cut in is so obviously stupid, it's hard to tell what the plan is.

Re: Euro 2024
Agree, playing Alexander Arnold as a holding midfielder is so ridiculous and not letting him play to his strenghs and why do these tv interviews with Southgate always go so soft on him, why not let an ex footballer pundit like Shearer or Linekar do the after match interview and ask a few proper questions.Monkey Boy wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 4:34 am The penny has finally with people about Southgate including the so called pundits. Again setting up with so many defensive players and formations, Arnold doesn’t play for Liverpool in that position yet Southgate puts him there in a knockout comp.He said “we haven’t found a replacement for Phillips,so what does that tell you about his forthcoming set ups.He looked shocked when interviewed like a little boy lost.so when the FA come to there senses and get rid who will they replace him with. Lee Carsley. Yet another tw*t that will nod his head to the FA. No wonder so many people don’t follow the national side anymore.

Re: Euro 2024
I suppose the big question for England's next game against Slovenia is will Southgate leave out Trent.

Re: Euro 2024
Has to either be Bellingham sitting deeper and put Palmer or Foden as the 10, or Mainoo coming in. Southgate has more or less admitted he doesn't know how to set a midfield up without Phillips, which is an astonishing admission given that Phillips has made himself unpickable for 2 years now.

He's actually been excellent. For all the talk of us missing Maguire, that's been the least of our concerns.Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 11:00 am One big plus so far for England is the form of Marc Guéhi !

The sports press is really turning on Southgate. Which means he has no option but for this to be his next pre-match press conference:

Re: Euro 2024
Amusing that Chelsea after spending a billion odd quid and now worrying about spending had Marc Guehi, Jamal Musiala, Declan Rice, Michael Olise, Fikayo Tomori, Nathan Ake then going back further De Bruyne and Salah all on their books
Incredible profligacy

Re: Euro 2024
That's true but it's Southgate who has been picking the bad players instead of the good ones and telling them where to stand about and how to play. He should go now before it's too late.Hoover Attack wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 9:03 am Can’t blame Southgate for elite players being unable to play simple 5 yard passes and show for their team mates.

Re: Euro 2024
If Stanley Mathews and Tom Finney had been playing nowadays, he would most likely have also played them out of their best positions !Mistadobalina wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 10:49 am Has to either be Bellingham sitting deeper and put Palmer or Foden as the 10, or Mainoo coming in. Re: Euro 2024
Scotlands manager does a good job at picking from a far smaller choice of players, they did very well in their last game.Max B Gold wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 12:04 pmThat's true but it's Southgate who has been picking the bad players instead of the good ones and telling them where to stand about and how to play. Terry Venebles was the last good England manager.

Re: Euro 2024
Southgate has objectively been a good England manager up until this point. He's our second best ever behind Ramsey. Venables did a single home tournament and didn't get as far as Southgate did in 2021.Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 12:08 pmScotlands manager does a good job at picking from a far smaller choice of players, they did very well in their last game.Max B Gold wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 12:04 pmThat's true but it's Southgate who has been picking the bad players instead of the good ones and telling them where to stand about and how to play. Managers get to the end of their cycle, you've seen it with Lowe at Germany who won a world cup, Martinez at Belgium, Santos at Portugal, Mancini at Italy. Southgate seems to be at that point, it doesn't mean he always sh*t for us.

Re: Euro 2024
Euro 96 was great and all that, but what did El Tel's superior motivation skills earn us?Story of O wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 12:46 pm Venables was a good motivator, , dont think Southgate is
A drab draw against Switzerland (arguably lucky to get a point);
A drab win over Scotland (Gazza's wonder goal glossed over what could have been a very different story if Uri Geller hadn't made McAllister miss that pen);
A bona fide PUMPING of the Dutch, can't knock that at all;
Scraping past Spain on pens in the quarters (again, could have lost during regular time);
An unfortunate loss on pens v Germany.
So, at a max, 2 decent performances from the 5 games and the group stages after 2 matches didn't look wholly different from how we currently look under Southgate.
