We are usually awful in first game and 3 points means we’ve basically qualified.

Phil Foden can do one though ;)
England have only ever won their opening match at a Euros twice: the most recent two, both managed by Southgate.
Lost a final, semi final and qtr final, all under Southgate.
Yup, and that's a better record than all but one previous England Manager.

A loss is exactly that, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or last place, a loser as player and manager.

Would you be happy with that record from an O's manager, I don't think so.

Played brilliantly for club, but couldn't ever play well for England

Foden turning out the same. Might help if he was played in his best position though
Agree but keep playing him wide left winger type role is playing him out of position.
Similar case to when Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson was once asked why Paul Scholes was the one he made play on the left wing.

How do England get the best out of Foden ?
BBC Sport pundits discuss how England can get the best out of Phil Foden after a quiet night for the Man City forward in the Three Lions' opening win against Serbia. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/vi ... ggydgjr47o

If an Orient manager took us to a European Championship semi final I reckon we should all be reasonably impressed.

Gerard and Lampard never worked well playing together, sometimes you just lose out if two good players are vying for the same spot.
Classic example of that being Clemence and Shilton.

Let me substitute that inane reply with Div 1 Play Off.

Gerard and Lampard playing together may not have worked well, but I think Clemence and Shilton playing together would have been practically unbeatable

It would, but not if on every occasion we went in front then lost.
Don't recall losing to Blackpool or Rotherham like that very fondly.

It's all well and good banging on about winning, but you have to be consistently getting to the latter stages of a tournament to be in with a chance of that. And, so far, Southgate has proven himself to be the most successful England manager in terms of tournament progression.

Ramsey - 1 final (which the team won), 1 quarter final, and 1 failure to qualify.
Robson - Failed to qualify in '84, 1 quarter final, eliminated in group stage of '88, 1 semi final.
Eriksson - 3 quarter finals.
Southgate - 1 quarter final, 1 semi final and 1 final

Yes, he is conservative in his tactics and reluctant to make timely substitutions. But I'd take this era over any previous one.

And, while last night's performance was on the turgid side, in past eras we'd have either conceded an equalizer or even lost that game.

England lacked penetration on their left hand side.

Whether this was ordered, or just lack of quality, I don't know

Better teams than Serbia will expose Englands shortcomings

It’s so bizarre seeing people saying the same old sh*t, when we have, for the last decade, consistently grown into tournaments, navigated the group stage well, put in big performances. And how do people not get that the quality of a group stage performance says nothing about how a quarter final goes?
Did England play the same way against Netherlands in 96 as Switzerland a week earlier?

They should have scored at least 3 goals in that half.

How odd that he kept fouling him then.
Kane was diving and throwing himself all over the place.
And winning free kicks, retaining possession and breaking the flow of the game in the process. Like what a proper centre forward should be doing.
Probably still a 5 out of 10 at best. Also missed a sitter.

Definitely. He's at risk of doing a 'Corbyn' otherwise.

Not even Southgate can help Scotland. We are doomed to be the best UK team for all time.

No mention of France making hard work of it against Austria, or Belgium losing to Slovakia but plenty about Gareth winning against Serbia.
