Time to prepare for the tournament. Which means giving Mike Bassett: England Manager another watch.

German Guardian journo getting all worked up about the prospect of people enjoying a few weeks supporting their national football teams.

I, for one, will be doing what I have done since 2006: hoping that the German football team – again one of the favourites – lose their opening matches and get kicked out of the tournament as quickly as possible. It might be the only way to limit the ugly party mood.

Because England lifting the trophy will still not be good enough for the haters, they will say "he just got lucky to win the Euros, it was the players alone that made it happen"

I find it mildly interesting watching matches and discovering where most of the Premier League players come from. I mean, obviously, if I was that interested, I could find out beforehand, but I'm not really. Who knew Akanji of Man C and Schar of Newcastle were Swiss? Not me obviously. Or that Chelski's La Cucaracha was Spanish (for some reason thought he was Mexican or something) Or that Luca Modric was still playing at the age of 72. Or that Hungary had a big fat bloke who plays centre forward. I'd guessed that Liverpool's Szlozoboszolz was probably Hungarian though.

How are you watching?

I cant see much difference in quality between bbc 1 hd and iplayer hdr, not sure what the resolution is there, variable probably but would expect 4k with a decent connection normally, but they may use something less with the number of people streaming. Broadcast definitely ahead by almost a minute.

That was such a Southgate performance, attacking full backs barely getting over the half way line, and wingers that thrive on floating and cutting in forced to hug the line.

Similar tactics for England to the Euro final against Italy. England go onto cautious and defensive mindset once they scored the early goal. Kane had little impact last night apart from falling over when challenged to gain free kicks.

Gaining free kicks to alleviate pressure and break up play was literally part of his role last night though.

Big centre half had him in his back pocket all day long.

Kane was good last night. Literally no idea how he pulled down and held onto a couple of those balls.

Going by the way we played last night , that photo is a fact . I thought Serbia was worthy of a draw .

How odd that he kept fouling him then.

Kane is always a threat. He had lost something of the ability to sprint away from players, though….

Kane barely put a foot wrong yesterday. The phrase “unselfish performance” exists to describe exactly what he did - a disciplined role to help the team to keep its shape.

If anything, his second half performance was less disciplined as he did get pulled deep, but even then, the hold up play - and yes the physical battle - was exactly what was needed. And then he gets one chance and he’s a superb reflex save away from killing the game off.

Oh, and turns up in defence with an important block.

A lot of people will talk about someone being good off the ball without realising what that means in practice

And winning free kicks, retaining possession and breaking the flow of the game in the process. Like what a proper centre forward should be doing.

Forgot about that, very important moment - if he'd been a a scotch defender, he'd probably have done a lap of the pitch fist pumping the air in celebration.

For all the Southgate aaaat whinge-mob. Serbia didn’t really pose much threat. A few long range shots but I was impressed with rice and Gheihi in particular who nullified them.

We are usually awful in first game and 3 points means we’ve basically qualified.

Phil Foden can do one though ;)

England have only ever won their opening match at a Euros twice: the most recent two, both managed by Southgate.

Lost a final, semi final and qtr final, all under Southgate.
The man who said he will protect the youngsters, is that like sticking them on for a penalty shoot out?

Foden is turning into John Barnes from 35 years ago.

Played brilliantly for club, but couldn't ever play well for England

Foden turning out the same. Might help if he was played in his best position though

He was just as bad playing centrally v Iceland.

Being played in your second favourite position doesn't make you muff up simple 5 yard passes. Something ain't right with him.
