Re Report in Births Deaths & Marriages Thread
There was a controversial comment about the death of Dr Michael Mosely in Births Deaths & Marriages Thread. I would like to widen the debate a tad. There is a convention, that we didn't ought to speak bad of the dead, especially when they've only just croaked. I am kinda ambivalent in my views of the late doctor. My bottom line is, that it takes a lot of hard work and time to qualify as a doctor & it is not definitely not a job, that any old bod can do. They usually work extremely hard and can save or improve people's lives. Thus I get mixed feelings, when some, not too long after qualifying, decide to use their qualifications to make tons of filthy lucre. I am not sure if this TV doc fits into this category; he highlighted some of our bad habits & greatly used his high profile to this purpose. He tried to make medical topics more understandable for the proles. In the end, he maybe wasn't such a great role model, as on the face of it, his last expedition seemed a bit daft. I've been to Symi, I wouldn't have chosen to have done what he did. A trip to the port and an hour or two in civilisation sufficed for me.
Another example is Prof Alice Roberts. She too is often on the TV screens. But in her case there is a slight difference. She has taken her qualifications into the field of Anthropology. A niche subject. Her medical knowledge brings with it a synergy to the study of Anthropology. At the same time, she must make loadsa money from her TV appearances & sometimes they can be somewhat gimmicky. She professed in one programme to have slept alone in the African Veldt; what about the camera crew etc?
My cousin was a doctor, moved into being a Radiologist, then Oncology, finally becoming a Professor. She announced a few years before retiring that she was moving into the private sector to make some loot. She said that she had worked her socks off all her life & she wanted some dividends. I can't say that I hold any grudges in that case. My favourite Author was a qualified Medical Doctor & moved into TV writing & then being a highly successful novel writer. What are our reader's views on this topic? Should people cash in on "worthy" qualifications shortly after getting them?

I’ve had my issues with Mick McQuaid but there’s been a bit of an OTT reaction to what was really a self deprecating joke about his own unhealthy lifestyle, no?

TLDR: doctors are making loadsa money.
I think they're all at it and why wouldnt you?
Takes years of study (of course) and I'm told newly qualified ones make little money and work very long hours.
On occassions I've seen doctors privately, they've been open about also working days for the nhs.

Can't believe anyone was genuinely offended by what he said.

Re: Re Report in Births Deaths & Marriages Thread
Exactly. All he did was make a joke about a well respected tv doctor that has just died in tragic circumstances, intimating that the doctor deserved it and that he was happy about it.
It's not as if he did something awful like, I don't know, singing a song about a dead person being in a box or clicking ones fingers to erase a country from the map.

Making less sense than the OP, which is an achievement.
