Re: Tory Watch
Well known conservative leaning think tanks who have given to the Tories for years I’d guess

Re: Tory Watch
That’s their private business
Im unsure of the point you’re trying to make?
That only individuals should be able to give to political parties?
That organisations who give to political parties should publish lists of their donors/members and all their personal details?
Neither?

It's not their private business if the are seeking to benefit from government largesse should their favoured party win.Currywurst and Chips wrote: ↑Wed Jun 12, 2024 6:23 pm That’s their private business

Its also important to prevent foreign nations attempting to subvert or influence UK democracy

No
You haven’t proposed anything and just said why you're against the current system….. For certain think tanks
I’d love to hear what you actually think should replace it… genuinely

That’s not a policy and is incoherent/illiterate to say the least
I assume you were just sharing a tweet you thought was good and didn’t actually put any thought into it again?

Re: Tory Watch
Breaking news. It wasn't intended to be a policy just two reasons why donors should not be allowed to remain anonymous. But you don't seem to think that is a concern for a democratic country. Re: Tory Watch
Oh but I do, I just want to know how to solve it when think tanks and unions with thousands of members contribute to political parties? And how do we achieve transparency then?Max B Gold wrote: ↑Wed Jun 12, 2024 8:05 pmBreaking news. And unfortunately shaking a fist and moaning on here at the ones you don’t like isn’t going to work
Sadly, it appears you were just sharing a tweet again without much thought. It was a bloke trying to fund raise for his fringe site. If you actually want to engage in any serious discussions on campaign finance though I’m happy to engage.

What Unions? The Tories destroyed them & they're trying to do the same to the country

Re: Tory Watch
Why drag unions into it. Probably one of the most democratic institutions in the country who publish accounts that disclose political donations. So nothing to wet the bed about there.Currywurst and Chips wrote: ↑Wed Jun 12, 2024 8:16 pmOh but I do, I just want to know how to solve it when think tanks and unions with thousands of members contribute to political parties? I'm more worried about the think tank contributions to the Tories who refuse to disclose where their money comes from.
There are rules around disclosure of the source of donations for political parties but if I'm a govt PPE contract winner or a foreign despot I could donate to the think tank, who then give it to the Tories and nobody would know what I got in return.

Re: Tory Watch
And the solution is? Most parties benefit from donations from think tanks and similar institutions
Shaking your fist at it won’t work.
What should be done?

Re: Tory Watch
Er - let me think, oh, I've got now. Enact legislation that ensures all donations to think tanks are disclosed and are fully transparent.Currywurst and Chips wrote: ↑Wed Jun 12, 2024 8:49 pm And the solution is? Most parties benefit from donations from think tanks and similar institutions

If those donations go back to a chain of LLPs or shell companies etc. Extend the money laundering rules to catch them and ban the think tanks donating to political parties. If its all above board no one has anything to worry about.
