How would one get “typical views” out of a potential pool of a few million voters?

Maybe you could ask a significant enough sample size some questions to ascertain those views? Like a survey, or something.

That or just go with one's own preconceived stereotypes (see the 'cranks', purple haired, yoghurt knitter tags applied to anyone left of centre, as an example of this approach).
