Sourcing support for your joints
Bloody arthritis kicking in as I'm doing some physical DIY work. Osteoarthritis probably from playing football when younger. Anyone got any good life "hacks" ?
I know all the usual ones - lose weight, take regular exercise, good diet, stop wanking so much, but anyone got some time proven tips?
I thang yew.

NHS diagnosed that I needed a hip replacement within a 10 year span. That was 12 years ago so as I am thinking of retiring I thought I should take advantage of private health care that my company provide.BoniO wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2024 1:22 pm Bloody arthritis kicking in as I'm doing some physical DIY work. Turns out that I didn't need a hip replacement at all, I have arthritis in the lower back and that is what has been the issue with me walking at certain times and feeling the aches and pains that I do.
I have started a course of Physiotherapy and got to say that although sceptical at first, it has done wonders for me. I can walk a fair distance now and feel a lot more free movement than I have done in the last 12 years

Re: Sourcing support for your joints
Sleep posture?
I had pain in both knees at the age of 55 ish, despite being only a modest amount over weight, non smoker etc etc
I found that I’d been sleeping on my side (as usual) but the ‘upper’ leg had no support until my ankle, resting ont’ mattresss. This was causing shear stress on the ligaments on the sides of the knee.
So I have gotten into the conscious and sleep habit of ensuring my ‘lower’ leg is underneath the knee of the ‘upper’ leg, taking a lot of the weight. After a few weeks - Sorted!
Also, when driving for more than than an hour, I shove a small pillow between my right knee and the door of the car - stops my right leg rotating outwards as it presses on the gas pedal.

Wife has a sore hip, always sleeps on the same side with a pillow between her legs.Orient_Man_And_Boy wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2024 5:24 pm Sleep posture?

Re: Sourcing support for your joints
I had knee pain on and off through my 30's, in my 40's I started taking collagen supplements (Bsc Collagen regenerate) and the pain went away. After a couple of years I stopped taking it and the pain came back, so started taking it again and haven't had a problem since. There is some scientific research behind this (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10058045/)

My wife has preventative post cancer treatment and takes something called Zoledronic Acid.
Its mainly used as a treatment for Osteoporosis and helps strengthen bones by increasing bone density.

Old method: take cod liver oil capsules? Cheaper alternative to collagen tablets. Not sure that they are as effective.

I have osteoarthritis in my hip. I take turmeric supplements from Nutrition Geeks. I know it's not going to cure it, but in my mind it's keeping it at bay.

Right - so I’m gonna do all this lot together - is it too late to enter for the Olympics?
Thanks for the advice all. Some I knew about - some I didn’t. I’ve been considering physio for a while and I’ll be trying some supplements too.

Where is your pain. I suffer horrible pain in knees , back shoulders . I try not to take too many painkillers. I try and exercise daily. Raising the feet when in bed helps my legs generally.BoniO wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2024 1:22 pm Bloody arthritis kicking in as I'm doing some physical DIY work. Voltarol and Nurofen painkillers.
It was Ralgex before Voltarol came along.
And if it's knees, like me, "McDavid" elastic supports if you are going to walk a distance.
I've been doing this for 27 years since the first "wash-out" of my right knee. The surgeon told me to come back 10 years later and he'd give me a new knee, well 27 years later I'm still ok with the one I was born with.
