Best Central Defenders
I think it's still early to have a firm judgement on Jack Simpson, but nevertheless ignoring contract speculation, who would be your central defensive pair. Vote for two. Just intrigued as I think opinions will vary widely.

Re: Best Central Defenders
If we retain all 4, this is definitely our best covered area. Not much to choose between any of them, 4 genuine L1 standard players to fight it out.

Re: Best Central Defenders
Indeed, but will Nathan Light be physical enough in this league of hammer throwers?

Re: Best Central Defenders
Our four main CB’s all bring their own attributes so it’s impossible for me to choose . One thing is for sure, if we keep all four for next season we will be incredibly strong in that area . I wish all our other positions could be that strong .

Re: Best Central Defenders
His distribution seems to be superb and he looks extremely comfortable on the ball. On a purely footballing level, can see why Wellens pushed for him despite the obvious baggage.

Basically, that’s why we need keep him. Whether we should have signed him in the first place is on the other thread. We need players who are above if we want to progressBiggsyMalone wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 4:12 pmI don’t like him but its clear his level is above what we have

Nah mate.
Not looked out of place when should have been really rusty. With a full pre season, I’d expect him to be first choice.

Re: Best Central Defenders
I fully accept Jack Simpson has looked comfortable on the ball. That said he has only been involved in the last four matches where we have conceded seven goals. At Derby we conceded from three corners and looked a shambles at the back. Obviously not all Simpsons fault, but I've not seen a commanding defence with him in the team. Not saying he's awful, only that the jury is still out IMHO. Not sure how he is clearly above the other three just because he can pass a ball.RedDwarf 1881 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 4:30 pmBasically, that’s why we need keep him. When you play with Omar Beckles, the whole defence shits a brickChelmsford Swimmer wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 5:34 pmI fully accept Jack Simpson has looked comfortable on the ball. Re: Best Central Defenders
I believe Omar without Jack Simpson helped us go five matches without conceding a goal at the beginning of the year. Obviously the seven goals we've conceded since Jack started playing are all Omar's fault.BiggsyMalone wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 6:43 pmWhen you play with Omar Beckles, the whole defence shits a brickChelmsford Swimmer wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 5:34 pmI fully accept Jack Simpson has looked comfortable on the ball. Beccles frightens the life out of me, he’s far to casual and doesn’t have the pace to make up for his mistakes,Happe as I’ve said many times is great when he’s fit however your be lucky to get half the season out of him. Release them both and get two new CB’s in.

Re: Best Central Defenders
Still can’t quite understand the flak Beckles gets. Our best form in many years was when he and Happe were together at the start of this year. When he’s good, Orient are good, and it’s clear how highly Wellens rates him.

Re: Best Central Defenders
Omar struggles to concentrate for 90 mins, just too relaxed sometimes and it costs us.
I don’t think he should be in the first choice pairing but a decent enough back up.

Re: Best Central Defenders
At least Happe's two major injury's of recent seasons have been different to each other, not recurrences of the same injuries. We miss his height and heading ability in central defence so IMO, well worth keeping him for next season, but of course that is also down to if he wants to stay at the Os when his contract runs out at the end of this season. Due to general bad health I have not been able to go and attend any of Os matches this season but from all accounts, Simpson appears to be a good footballing central defender.Monkey Boy wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2024 6:38 am Beccles frightens the life out of me, he’s far to casual and doesn’t have the pace to make up for his mistakes,Happe as I’ve said many times is great when he’s fit however your be lucky to get half the season out of him. Re: Best Central Defenders
The problem is when he is good is few and far between. When he’s bad, he costs us games.
He’s coming up to 33 years of age, now is the time to move him on.
