The people running these businesses are paid on their ability to generate payments to investors, not on their ability to actually run the business.

Thames Water told by auditors it could run out of money by April
I wonder if we'll just bring it back into public ownership, or just bail them out.

Don't be daft, private ownership is always better value for the taxpayer than public ownership

The government held a golden share equivalent to 51% of the share capital.
This was to protect the companies.
But once the offers started to come in both Major (mainly) and Blair gave way, instead of keeping the utilities for investors, pension funds etc to benefit.

Investors don't want to 'invest' any more unless bills are increased by up to 40%.

How does one go about taking sewage out of our waterways - how much longer before fish stocks, including shellfish are affected? No wonder sea food is so expensive. Who is going to accept the blame for all this?

Good idea for Starmar to put it in the manifesto. But he won't.

Half of Essex is going to kill us all? Which half? Assume the bit with Jaywick in it.

Just heard someone on the radio say that it should be nationalised, even though we'd still have to pay the debt.
Er, why would we?

Don't let the facts stand in the way of your agenda. Its 40% over the next 6 years. Still too much but takes most of the drama out of that statement.Hoover Attack wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 10:37 am Investors don't want to 'invest' any more unless bills are increased by up to 40%.

Any guarantees that sewage will still not find its way into the Thames or that any repairs would stay repaired?

Er, why would we?
The banks and offshore robbing scum should take a bath. Why should investing be risk free but derisked by state support. Socialism for the rich penury for the poor.

Doesn't change a single thing, however. The robbing bastards that have taken billions off of us over the years are unwilling to put back in now it's turned out they've taken out too much.

SO, what you're saying is that we all need to ensure we have these privatised utilities in our investment portfolios?

Privatisation was the biggest disaster to hit UK Working Class people. Sale of the Century = Con of the Century.

Surely the time for people to wake up is long past. Should have maybe thought it through a bit 40 odd years ago instead of believing all the bollox.Friend or faux wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 2:20 pm Privatisation was the biggest disaster to hit UK Working Class people. Re: Thames Water going down the plughole
It's the same with Royal Mail . These privatised companies care more about their shareholders than they do their customers . If they didn't chuck their shareholders so much money they wouldn't need to push bills up so high . Privatisation is a fcuking rip off .Max Fowler wrote: ↑Wed Jun 28, 2023 12:40 pm https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-66039170
We're going to step in and bail them out, aren't we? No questions asked about how many billions have been siphoned off via interest payments to owners.

Re: Thames Water going down the plughole
One of the things that Punters don't realise, is that a lot of the Nationalised Industries were profitable and making a lot of money for the UK Government. These were the first Industries to be Privatised. Sid will confirm this ( he made a load of dough out of us ). Years on people wonder why taxation doesn't meet the demands of: NHS, Education, transport etc.
