How are international friendlies arranged?

Post by The Reverend »

I was looking at the international fixtures over the weekend and there are proper random match ups. Some examples which stood out to me include:

Tanzania 0 Bulgaria 1
Azerbaijan 1 Mongolia 0
Egypt 1 New Zealand 0
Algeria 3 Bolivia 2

How do these wacky pairings get arranged? Does somebody from the Tanzania FA open the directory of football associations and work through them: “fancy a friendly in March?”

They’re not that wacky when you consider the anthropic principle applies to all of them.

Hull Reserves in Turkey v Caribbean island is pretty niche.
