Laurie Cunningham

Post by Yanzi Gravy »

Laurie Cunningham was born this day in 1956. Raise a glass of something to toast his birthday and post any interesting stories about this great player and Orient Legend.

Nearly played against him in a training session, it’s a long story but I went to the wrong place whilst on trial 🙄

I remember that Laurie was a keen dancer, used to enter dancing competitions. He then proceeded to dance round the opposition. Maybe we should introduce dance lessons for our forwards? I'm sure Pigott would be a natural.

Probably the best player I've seen in an Orient shirt 🤔 and I've been supporting em for 60 years 👍

In some ways, I wish his statue was even closer to the ground. It would gain more attention.

The best player I've ever seen to grace Brisbane Road.

Watched him play in a youth game at Spring Hill (I think) The O's staff on the side line watched as he picked the ball up in his own half I remember them shouting "pass it Laurie" as he waltzed past two opponents, turned on the afterburners and glided forward " now give it son" one of them called - but by then he'd left two more defenders on their backsides before slipping the ball past the keeper and into the bottom corner, he just turned round and grinned at the coaches looking on, he was a massive massive talent. I knew then he was special it turned out he was the best I have ever seen in an O's shirt.

I think the sad thing for us is that Laurie had said that he wanted to come back and play at the O's for the last couple of years of his career, he would have been a different player to the one that left but we didn't get to see enough of him.
