Anyone else’s eyesight just drop off a cliff at 40?
Started wearing glasses last year, but couldn’t find them last week, and had been wearing them off and on since I found them a couple of days later, and my sight has deteriorated massively in one year. Definitely can’t read a book without them now, and cycling without probably not a great idea either - everything more than 20 metres away is double vision/blurry

I always thought wearing glasses co tributes to speed in which eyesight deteriorates due to become dependent on them.

Sounds plausible but when I looked into that, it seems to very quickly take you to rabbit holes of alternative therapy type rubbish, reputable places seem to say they don’t, but I’m open minded

My eyesight's been absolute dogshit since I was about 5 so no discernible difference. The idea of laser surgery - THEY CUT OPEN YOUR EYES - terrifies me, happy with contacts for now.

You seem to read my posts ok, well enough to be so sarcastic about them, but to seriously answer your post I can’t see a bloody thing first thing in the morning and need glasses to read. Can’t stand driving at night as the oncoming cars lights are just to bright for me but my peripheral vision is quite good, good enough to see that awful goal we let in Saturday.

Having had a cataract op I can guarantee to you that there’s nothing worth worrying about when it comes to eye ops. Removed some stitches in the follow up - no big deal at all (although he kept that quiet until the time!).
Well worth seeing a decent optician once a year.

Cateract op. What smell of burning eyeballs?
Had both eyes done. First I was as nervous as hell, but second, knowing how it worked was a doddle. Small cut, they desolve the old lense with ultra sound, suck it out and plonk a new lense in. Job done. No pain, no stitches, just avoid strenuous stuff for a couple of weeks.
Fantastic, if you have cateracts get it sorted.

That was the original laser eye surgery. Nobody had warned me of the smell (akin to burning flesh) but the results were good.
Newer methods are different, less invasive and quicker recovery time.
But in the long term: nothing can totally exclude some age related short sightedness.

My wife used to have perfect vision, whereas mine was just about good enough to get by. Her vision has deteriorated since turning 40 to the point where she needs glasses, but my good enough has stayed the same.

No. Also had some laser surgery as a follow up. Absolutely no issue at all there. Laser just zaps some bits and pieces, can’t even remember what now.

The worsening sight problems are possibly caused by age related macular degeneration.
Always worth having regular eye tests because they can give an early indications of serious conditions.

They do say too much of it sends you blind.

Had my eyes lasered about 20 years ago. My long vision is still perfect but, as I was advised at the time, my near vision would gradually decline due to muscle wastage at the back of the eye or something. I need reading glasses to look at anything close up so just buy these cheapo reading specs for about £3. Have never regretted it, as couldn't wear contact lenses and wearing specs all day was really irritating

Also had laser eye to correct relatively bad short-sightedness, about 14 years ago. Worked a charm, until hitting 40 - and now I need glasses for screen use and (as of last week) glasses for longer vision.

Allied to chronic stiffness, injury-proneness and worsening tinnitus / hearing loss in one ear, I can confidently say that middle age is bullshit and they'd better have legalised assisted dying by the time I'm 60.

Tinnitus is a bugger. I get a sort of high pitched screech in my left ear which annoys me particularly when in bed. My old mum used to hear an orchestra playing in her ears which drove her round the bend, so hope I never get that form of tinnitus

Had cataracts in both eyes done. No big deal and the outcome was fantastic. Had laser treatment after but you don't feel a thing.

Worse though was a detached retina. To repair this the surgeon goes right into the eye. All the juice comes out as he does his thing with sharp implements at the back of your eye. It's all done under local and my anaesthetic was wearing off by the time he was finishing up. Horrible but very necessary and, again, the results were great. They fill the eye with gas and sew you up afterwards and you then need to spend a couple of weeks lying on your side 24x7. My brain learnt to watch TV sideways on during this time thankfully.

My eyes started to deteriorate about 20 years ago when I found out I had type 2 diabetes , I can't read without them and also have a pair for distance and tv . Although my diabetes has now gone most times when I have my yearly eye examination they tell me I have to upgrade cos my eyesite is a little worse , more bloody money
