As well as he has done here I don’t think he would be as in demand as some might think.

Look at it from a Championship clubs perspective. Hiring Wellens would be a bit of a gamble. He has never managed above league 1 and it’s now well known he has a bit of an attitude problem with the footballing authorities. So who in the championship hires him?

I doubt any of the top half championship teams would have him. They need somebody who is proven at Championship or even Premier League level. Or at least has Championship/Play-off experience at that level.

Of the lower half championship teams, there’s a few basket case clubs in there so rule those out (Wellens wouldn’t give up a secure job in league 1 with sensible owners for a precarious one at a club which could get relegated anyway).

That leaves what? 7 or 8 championship clubs who might take a punt on him. Of those, they would have to be London or North West / Yorkshire based. For example, I can’t see Wellens upping sticks to Plymouth. Maybe a Huddersfield or a Blackburn would take him (if they stay up). Possibly Swansea?

I could also see him going to another league 1 club with a bigger budget. Someone like Bolton if they don’t go up.

The only other option I can see is someone like Derby going up and their manager moving on. But again, in that situation don’t you want someone with Championship experience to keep you up?

Rev, You are 90%+ right as far as I'm concerned. I might differ on what club he might go to but he has a narrow choice. Based on his own past - and current - experiences I think he would be very selective where he went. He'd want a high degree of autonomy around any club he went to. The only thing that would cloud that judgement would be a contract that was too good to turn down - and that's understandable.

Well yes, but I did tell you that I was walking you through a point, and me “not being open to changing my mind” was because I was aiming to demonstrate something to you. But anyway, let’s not further derail…

This does feel like a big factor. With a fair wind (some decent Summer signings, fewer injuries) Wellens may well get us challenging even harder for the playoffs next season. But if he was given a similar budget next season and we finished outside the playoffs, surely there'd be a "taken the club as far as I can" risk at that point.

And not talking about the injuries either.

All of Piggot,Thompson, Drinnan and Moncur for two thirds of the season have been paid without contributing. Plus the two kids we've panic signed who aren't up to the level we need.

From the tenor of his recent post match interviews, I would say he'll be off soon. He seems to have lost interest and doesn't seem to take it seriously anymore. Very different to the way used to sound.
