There are other clubs he could go to.

Not one who prides itself on “zero tolerance” and are at the heart of of a large asian community.

Whether he's trolling or not, what 'the voice' says is very reasonable. If this player settles into our friendly club culture, starts performing well and is seen to be a reformed character, all this could be largely forgotten in time. Give the bloke a second chance to redeem himself, I say.

Not really. He's tried to downplay racism by saying he just said a nasty word.

The most telling thing to me seems to be that Cardiff City fans on social media seem to be uniformly of the opinion that the guy is a **** (fool) and that we’ve dropped a bollock by signing him. There seems to be not much suggestion that his former team mates have any time for him, and the fact that he “apologised several times” to the young guy he did the racism at, suggests that the first was not accepted, and the repeats were trying to batter him into accepting it

Yeah, I know social media is an often unreliable barometer but Cardiff fans seem to a man to a) absolutely hate him and b) think he's sh*t. Not seen a single conciliatory message wishing him well or whatever. Will certainly be interesting to see him in action, assuming that happens.

If he was any good, the response from Cardiff fans about what he's done would be totally different.

Not even seen the Disgruntled less enlightened Cardiff fans being like “the guy said a bad word and we sacked him, well done, now someone else has got a good player cos we’re so woke. FFS”

Bit we also seem to be combing the two issues - should we sign a player charged with racism and is he any good - into one discussion. They're two distinct points which have no correlation to each other.

The words used were deliberate to try and downplay the crime. So probably not.

Downplaying racial abuse as some “nasty words” then implying that anybody who pulls people up for doing this are being overly sensitive is a wonderful demonstration of why campaigns tackling racism in football are still very much needed.

They’re connected insofar as it’d be easier to understand the club’s reasoning (even without agreeing) if it was a unique, unmissable opportunity to get a player who would undoubtedly improve the team massively, with a bit of moral compromise the price to pay.

It seems like this isn’t that, so it’s all a bit baffling.

Fair.

Aside from the arguing, I think it's actually a really interesting debate and is making me question where I lie on the issue. I'd imagine that a lot of people decrying this move and saying it's unacceptable that we'd sign a guy who's aimed a racial slur at a player - appreciate it's not a criminal offence but he's not been found guilty by the FA based on 'probability', as sometimes happens, but other teammates appear to have corroborated what happened - would also be among those who, in different circumstances, champion the right of someone to be rehabilitated and not ruled out of securing a job (subject to caveats such as nonces not going back to the classroom etc) when they come out of prison. Feels like you can't have it both ways and people need to think about whether they want to impose conditions on *where* someone rehabilitates. Does he have to go to a town with a smaller Asian population? Does he have to go to non-League (where some people seem to assume the same sensibilities and debates don't apply simply because there's fewer people watching)?

I agree that some of NT and RW's chat about "giving him a second chance" is hamming things up and a bit distasteful, we're not doing this out of the goodness of our hearts, we're not a charity and this is a business/football decision and it's lacking credibility to suggest otherwise. But if we agree that people shouldn't always be written off for one incident, then maybe we shouldn't object to him signing. Its certainly a thorny issue.

Reverend is right. I’m glad he understands this. Recently, I had an experience on here, I can’t remember who with, where a boarder downplayed my objections to a moderators stated lack of sympathy for dead Palestinian civilians by framing it as “swearing at someone for having an opinion you don’t like”

Good points. I think where I am on it overall is that I don’t think it’s ridiculous to give a guy who has done some bad stuff a second chance, but it is ridiculous to try, badly, to do it in a context of taking about how comfortably it fits in with a zero tolerance for racism approach.

It’s probably a good idea for clubs to think about this aspect of recruitment strategically, rather than opportunistically: does the club have a policy on when and how it signs players with a past? Having a clear policy on this would make it less obvious that they’re awkwardly winging it

For example - maybe the club could have an actual, written “clean slate” policy - “we know players are human, and we will not rule players out of consideration based on misdemeanours for which they’ve been punished, but we do have a zero tolerance policy while they’re here, and we expect players to actively demonstrate commitment to our values”

Using a thread where people are having a serious discussion about racism in football to score points on an old feud of yours. Classy.

Do you have a load of YouTube videos lined up again or did you learn your lesson from from you recent ban for over the top harassment and bullying on here?

The fact everyone who said they would boycott the club over the Terry appointment still have season tickets doesn’t fill me with much hope that the moaning about this latest signing will be acknowledged by the club.

I’m going to sit on the fence with this one as there are many sides to the discussion however what I would say is the NT and RW seem to be very up front and forthright people and they wouldn’t of taken the decision lightly imo. Question is will it generally upset the momentum of the club in some way. I hope not as we have been flying. It’s no good ranting about it amongst ourselves. As many have said in “Richie we trust” personally I don’t think he will be here next season but one thing I do know is Wellens didn’t want to let Turns go or at least have a replacement in place and to me it shows what a balls up the last week of the window was yet again.
