VAR the death of football

Post by Frogger »

What an awful invention. I hope it is thrown out before we get to the Premiership. Useless piece of kit, giving absolute numpties a job.

In concept I don’t think it’s a bad thing but it’s not fit for purpose in its current form and it’s nice when you watch a game without it. I think the reliance on it lowers the standard of officiating in the moment as well.

Regardless of all that it’s so boring

Everyone holds up rugby (both codes) video refs/TMOs as what VAR should aspire to be more like but they're sh*t as well. Watching the 6 Nations or Superleague - and especially the Wigan-Penrith World Club Challenge on Saturday - refs literally don't award tries any more, every single time the ball's dotted down they send it upstairs for a review. Completely changed the essence of what reffing should be about and strips out the real time nature of the sports, just instead having a bloke in a hut try and find any particular reason to disallow something while everyone on the pitch stands around for a bit.

I despise it, completely mis-sold to fans of how it was going to be implemented. Not so much "clear and obvious" but more like "fussy and nitpicking"

Get rid of VAR then scrap PGMOL while we're at it and start again, they're not fit for purpose

I’d love goal line technology to remain permanently but the rest can do one. It’s like watching American handball - so slow and death by a thousand cuts. Sucks all the love and pace out of the game.

I'm quite happy it's not in the lower leagues at least I can celebrate a goal when it goes in. I don't have to wait 5 minutes for VAR to check sucks the life out of most games.

It was always going to start as a thin end of the wedge sort of thing. It will lead to every decision being checked and AI refs.
