The two new strikers have not yet gelled and at the moment don’t look like scoring . Despite all the ball we had around their box the clear cut chances were minimal - a bit worrying.

Yep, not a good look.Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Sat Aug 17, 2019 7:56 pm Ross is a very emotional bloke and often went mental at the officials and opposition bench last season. Agree though, as a manager, players look to you to be the one in control.
He needs to grow up fast and lead by example.
I have my doubts, but will give until the end of October.
My gut feeling is he hasn’t got what it takes and the board will probably move before then.
Expect to see Russ back in the dugout.

Right on all counts especially this comment...''Top of the West. wrote: ↑Sat Aug 17, 2019 7:53 pm It was a turgid performance, slow to get the ball forward and rarely if ever got in behind them. Only Brophy looked like he could unlock the back four he was great on the ball but as often is the case his final ball/cross was poor.
5-3-2 is killing us we haven't got the personnel to play it and create chances, both Ling and Widowson will make to go forward and turn the ball back or inside because they don't really have an attacking gene between them. We either need to change shape or recruit two experienced wing backs (which we won't) so we need to change shape.
I was also really concerned by Ross Embleton today, seemed more intent in getting involved with the fourth official and opposition bench than anything else. I was all in favour of the continuity of appointing from within but Embleton seems a tad "immature" and I would have preferred Danny Webb, Ross needs to get his act together and concentrate on getting things right on the pitch rather than getting antagonised on the side lines at the slightest little thing.
I would give Ross a dozen games to work things out, he needs to show some guts and change formation and bring in a couple of experienced players before the window shuts or return to the back benches and work under an experience manager.

Ross, seems to be a fish out of water as a first team manager. Danny Webb, more fire in his belly and more likely to try to make different formation changes. Out of the 3 choices, to me, Jobi stands out as the one who MIGHT be the best choice. At present though, he has to get all his coaching badges before he can be considered to do the top job

But it doesn't matter that we didn't score in the first three of those games. We set out to achieve an objective in two of those and were rusty in the third. What matters are the games this season.Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Sat Aug 17, 2019 8:15 pmLike it or not, I was just stating the fact that in our last 7 competitive games ( not counting pre-season friendly's ) we have scored just one goal in 7 games.Smendrick Feaselberg wrote: ↑Sat Aug 17, 2019 5:45 pmSituations were different though for those games though. This season is clearly more of a concern since we will be playing teams like this week after week and with largely this personnel moving forward. So add the four games this season and it means that in our last 7 games played, we have only scored ONE GOAL !! It would seem that we have a very big problem in scoring goals !!

Re: 360 mins and one goal....
I agree, context of the games is different.
Similarly I have seen people try to rationalise things by saying 'we have more points now than at the same stage last season'. This is also not really valid, I can bet that this type of comparison will be used for the last time this season this week.
Ross has had three seasons under experienced managers, one at Swindon and two here, he isn't going to change. Like I said before if we are doing badly, he is going to be more part of the problem rather than the solution. Treating him as a 'real' manager and not interim allows him a fair crack at the job, but also for us to do the right thing for the club if things do not work out.

Re: 360 mins and one goal....
No, I'm far from happy at that given it will cost us down the road. It's not that I'm ignoring the trend, but more that I'm able to filter out the irrelevant part of that - i.e. the lack of goalscoring in those three games wasn't an issue - and focus on the bit that matters - which is performance in the current squad where the objectives are different. Just saying something is a trend without looking deeper into it is rather hard of thinking. It doesn't matter that we scored one goal in seven games, but it does matter that we have scored one in the last four.Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Sat Aug 17, 2019 8:48 pmLike it or not, I was just stating the fact that in our last 7 competitive games ( not counting pre-season friendly's ) we have scored just one goal in 7 games.Smendrick Feaselberg wrote: ↑Sat Aug 17, 2019 8:34 pmBut it doesn't matter that we didn't score in the first three of those games. This is a run of 7 matches in which we have scored just one goal, a trend which you are choosing to ignore, but ok, have it your own way then, So this season, 4 games competitive games played and Os have only scored 1 goal, happy now ?

This. But surely the management know teams will do this to us at home and should make a plan to counter it. Or am I naive?Forty-Niner wrote: ↑Sat Aug 17, 2019 6:21 pm Stevenage set up not to concede, keeping nine men in defence for most of the game and the ineffectual Kurtis Guthrie on his own up front.
Their game plan was successful and they probably deserved their point.
But we need to start scoring. If you don't score you don't win.

And you could say exactly the same for Widdowson, but he doesn't get the same slating on here as Ling.RedDwarf 1881 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 17, 2019 6:36 pmI was watching Ling closely . Ling had a better game today, but MOTM, really ??
Neither are good wing backs IMO and I think the best attacking wing back of recent years was probably Caprice.
However he struggled defensively although I would take him over Ling right now.
Re: 360 mins and one goal....
I did not go to day, but seeing the line up, we started with, it looked negative, with JMD out of the team we had one less forward with Brophy who can play as an attacking wing back replaced by Widdowson who is not an attacking wing back and Brophy playing in the number 10 role so only 2 other forwards Angol and Wilkinson.
