Interesting use of the word "sustainable". Does "sustaining" a place in the Championship mean that "someone" will have to pour multi - £Ms in year after year ? and if so, what's "sustainable" about that?

It’s not to make the Championship, it’s for it to be sustainable once we make it.
This. The board don't just want promotion to the championship they want us to be able to sustain it. They know this is a multi year project centred around a new stadium. If we go up beforehand they won't complain, but know we won't be able to compete to stay up until we have greater revenue stream strength.

Was also my reading of it, to be honest. But other folk around here were stating as fact that what queered the pitch and annoyed him so much was a club policy to save a few weeks' wages by deliberately leaving any business to the last minute.

Late signings in the window happen because clubs are reluctant to let players go without replacements lined up, eventually things happen and it has a chain/domino effect resulting in lots of 'late' signings.

In the last 4 January windows, the earliest we’ve signed someone was Brandon Cooper this Jan…16th Jan.

Are we? There's a ten point gap.
See Richie’s interview from yesterday - he thinks so.

Top of the JES wrote: Sun Feb 04, 2024 4:50 pm So I'm reposting this from earlier this season as it is relevant as it disproves the notion that we sign players late - it relates to last summers window. Also the crap that we sign players late to save wages which the same people keep posting.

"So to put this late transfer bullshit to bed:- We Signed:-

1/7 Ethan Gailbraith on expiry of his Man U contract a day earlier.
1/7 Dan Agyei on expiry of his Crewe contract a day earlier.
1/7 Max Sanders on expiry of his Lincoln contract a day earlier.
5/7 Idris El Mizouni on loan from Ipswich Town.
6/7 Sam Howes from Wealdstone.
10/7 Sol Brynn from Middlesboro. This was the earliest date M'boro would allow him to join us.
21/7 Joe Pigott from Ipswich on the same day he had his contract at Portman Road ripped up.
1/8 Ed Turns on loan from Brighton 2 days after returning from Brighton's US pre season tournament.
2/8 Jordan Graham who has been talking with other clubs after his release from Birmingham. Wellen's really wanted him.
14/8 Shaq Forde from Watford after they agreed he could join.
1/9 Brandon Cooper on deadline day after injury to Beckles .

First three signed on the first day they became free agents, could not have signed any sooner.
El Miz Signed because of his excellent relationship with ML - no-one thought we could get him back but Ling got him.
Sam Howes was a bit left field as signings go.
Sol Brynn signed for us the deal had been in the making for a couple of weeks but Boro wanted him for pre season training before letting him come to us.
Joe Pigot had another season at Ipswich and had to negotiate his release and joined us the day he left Ipswich Town.
Ed Turns signed at the earliest opportunity after Brighton agreed he could return, He was in America with BHA three days prior to signing.
Jordan Graham was speaking to other clubs before we got him we had been talking to him for some time before he made his mind up to come to us.
Shaq Forde not sure how long he was in the pipeline but brought in to cover Agyei and Drinan getting injured.
Brandon Cooper signed on deadline day to give us a fourth centre back as cover.

So 9 of our 11 signing made before the season started Forde and Cooper signed before deadline day was done. It's not that they were signed late but to get decent players in a club like ours needs to be patient because we haven't got a budget to spend money on players - apart from Howes (nominal fee) all our signings were out of contract or loans. We have had terrible luck with injuries early on and it has forced our hand with the Forde and Cooper signings.

We don't put off signing players to save a months wages here and there I'm afraid there are some proper mugs on here who will believe anything, Ling commented last close season that one of our signings had delayed putting pen to paper and at least it had saved the club a months wages it was tongue in cheek but those of a limited IQ are unable to separate this from fact. it was a one off and down to the player not the club"
Great Stuff Tot Jes.

Hopefully kills the wage saver rumour for good.

Most clubs in the Championship operate at a lost, so to be sustainable until a ground is big enough and revenue is sufficient to at least break even then owners will have to cover all deficits.
It’s the same for most Championship clubs.

In terms of the two players in being first time loanees, I do recall Harry Kane being a first time loanee in League One and who would have guessed then that he would go on to be one of the best ever strikers in the Premier League. Also with Kevin Campbell, albeit in league 2, it was his 9 goals in 16 appearances that propelled us to promotion, so let's give these two new boys a chance.

Another point is about the size of the stadium, both Luton and Bournemouth are in the Premier League with capacity less than 12,000. On the other hand clubs like Ipswich, Derby, Reading, Hull, Sunderland, Barnsley, Charlton and Wigan all have stadium capacities above 25,000, but all have ended up in League One in recent years and many have had points deductions for mismanagement of their finances. So the stadium size is not the be all and end all, and in any event a new stadium would take 5 to 10 years and cost £50 million plus. So that is a pipe dream at the moment.

You make some very good points, you mention Luton and Bournemouth but can you really see both clubs remaining in the prem for let’s say more than 3/5 seasons? I went and saw spuds v city last week( yes I know but couldn’t sit through love island with the other arf) there bars take £1m in drink sales alone at each game. I know it’s the top end but it just goes to show how much can be made through other means and just not ticket sales. Our club bar under the west stand is far to small and that probably goes for most of the others as well, trying to get a drink is like being in a rugby scrum. Personally think a new ground is a must but you do and have made good points.

Nobody is saying they won’t give these kids a chance. But what Richie says makes sense - if bringing in loanees, we are now a L1 club so should be looking at boys that have had experience of the national league or L2 previously.

Subject: Establishing oneself as a Championship Club

Stadium capacity - 10-12k: very difficult but possible
Stadium capacity - less than 10k: not possible

Marginal expansions on our current site that would take us above 10k capacity: ruinously expensive
Building an entirely new stadium: even more expensive but would at least make the underlying objective much easier.

Don't want to be seen as a tuffers apologist but I don't think he really thought either of these kids - even the younger one - actually need a creche. They're both legally adults.

Think it's all about being honest with the fans and the T & T's usually are.

If we go up be honest and see we'll take the uptick finances that comes along with that but also that they're not going to able to financially back someone to have a decent crack at staying in the division.

Think they've earned that from us.
