If a fan wants to get on the pitch, is it really possible to stop them? The Reverend wrote: ↑Sun Jan 28, 2024 8:08 am Have seen many people on social media think that this is either funny, justified or not that serious. I don’t care how bad a decision or entire performance is, no official deserves to be attacked. It’s a thankless enough job as it is.
Ultimately the question is “who is responsible for controlling fans behaviour?”. I think their answer is twofold. Individuals are responsible for their own behaviour so the idiot chasing the ref deserves a lifetime ban from all grounds and possibly some community service/jail time (yes, I think it’s that serious). The club also has a responsibility for the safety of those at the match, which they have failed so they deserves a punishment. A financial one for the first offence. Points dedications & behind closed doors for further.
Also, is the club pay one of these rent-a-hi-vis companies for their match day “security”, which most clubs do, then that company loses its contract immediately as they are unfit to serve the purpose they are being paid for. A but like what happened to the thugs for hire at AFC Wimbledon.

Re: Port Vale fan chases ref off pitch
I don’t think they were major balls up incidents but his performance was littered with mistakes and inconsistencies. There were lots of clear fouls that he let go unpunished - their penalty for the foul by Omar, the one El Miz was almost booked for arguing about etcMistadobalina wrote: ↑Sun Jan 28, 2024 11:41 amHe made two major balls ups in the first half where he didn't play the advantage when it was obviously on, and blocking a through ball that'd have had us closing in on goal. Also gave Theo absolutely nothing despite being manhandled.
But that's the thing, refs are no different to managers or players. They make mistakes. When you take a step back from it, they will never be the reason over a 46 game season why you didn't achieve something. It'll be down to players and management.
There are still some idiots on here who think that refs have it in for us because the EFL supposedly have a vendetta against us.
But he wasn’t helped by his assistants.

But he literally ran from one side of the pitch to the other unchallenged.

Running onto the pitch should probably be reserved for super fans

Sorry CEB normally agree with a lot of what you say. But you're saying bullying and intimidation is ok?. But you've never made a balls up at work have you.CEB wrote: ↑Sun Jan 28, 2024 10:28 am Poor refereeing (and lack of accountability by the refereeing authorities) is to blame here. Even though what this guy did is OTT, eventually people who pay their ticket money need to know that the game they’re watching is fair. Nobody expects referees to always get things correct, but since the introduction of VAR - even though not in play here - it does create a sense that for the game to be fair, decisions have to be right.
Going to stick my neck out here and say that if more fans actually had the chance to tell refs what they think of them, it might encourage them to make better calls.
Unless referring standards improve, this will happen more, and rightly so.
Intimidation is maybe the only means some fans have to make their voices heard, and it’s just as legitimate as phoning in 606 or something.
No referee should be able to feel like they can make big calls without being able to look a fan in the eye and say “I stand by it”

We don’t talk about that incident, though.
Leave the petty cash in the past (if not in the tin).

Re: Port Vale fan chases ref off pitch
Interesting take on the matter and I'll give my view as a now retired Level 4 referee.
That fact that someone can enter the field of play and run at the referee seemingly unchallenged is simply unacceptable. A referee, player or any official should not be exposed to mindless thuggery, irrespective of how they feel he/she is performing in their role. In my experience no official goes into a match with the intention of biased decision - making and by default of his/her actions depriving a team and it's fanbase of a 'result'.
I'm aware of referees attacked at grassroot level and the perpetrator going to prison. Not sure if the referee got to look him in the eyes, or the Magistrates for that matter when making the custodial call saying "I stand by it".
VAR can take minutes to make a decision and this is with the benefit of slow-motion replays of an incident from every conceivable angle they wish. Try making that same decision in real time.
Just putting my view across and acknowledge some posters are clearly ignorant of this area of the game.

^ now there’s a referee who could benefit from being chased off a pitch or two

Re: Port Vale fan chases ref off pitch
I noticed none of the players attempted to stop the lout though for all they know he may have been carrying a knife or gun. Referee was scared out of his wits. So would I be given the lack of assistance.

Players will have seen other players get involved with fans previously and end up getting sent off, so best to leave the ref to it.WilliamTell wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 9:20 am I noticed none of the players attempted to stop the lout though for all they know he may have been carrying a knife or gun. How many times has someone brought a gun into a UK football ground? Not downplaying the justifiable wariness players might feel about challenging supporters who enter the pitch, but let's not all go mental.

He conveniently drops the knife bit of the argument as he obviously has a few brain cells. But what a terrible bit of Boarding ! We all know that many youngsters carry blades, there is even a thread on this board about it.

Re: Port Vale fan chases ref off pitch
Lots of words about kids carrying knives, none of which say anything about the absurd fear of someone bringing A GUN into a football ground. And I'm not sure why suggesting people keep a modicum of proportion to their reactions means I think I'm a real tough guy. Are you OK?Friend or faux wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 11:03 am William Tell said :- " he may have been carrying a knife or gun."
