Fifty years ago today

Post by Highwood Man »

I attended my first ever Orient match. We played Fulham at home and won 1-0 thanks to a Bill Roffey screamer in the second half. I remember that the pitch was a real mud heap - very different to the current surface at Brisbane Road. That 73/74 season was the one in which we finished 4th in League 2 (as it then was) and just missed out on promotion up to Division 1 in the last home game against Aston Villa.

I'd happily take another 1-0 win at home to Wycombe tonight!

I also remember it,some of the football we played before Christmas was sublime but it all went a little Pete Tong after, due to what is the usual story at the O’s. One of the best footballing seasons.

There were some great games before Christmas that season, possibly the best for me was the 4-2 away at Notts County.
I think losing Gerry Queen to injury that day was the start of the rot, he was linking so well with Fairbrother and Bullock.

Yes, losing Queen was a blow. Have a feeling we lost Peter Allen to injury in the win at Ashton Gate New Year's Day too, but for those injuries I think we'd have made the top three.

Nice try, it was actually 1-1 away at Stoke on this ray 50 years ago. If you’re going to lie, make it believable

This is making me reminisce. My first Orient game was in 1973 at home to Huddersfield. We won 3-1.

Didn’t Peter Allen also get crocked at Bristol City on New Year’s Day in our 2-0 win and was out for a long period too? Talking of the Notts Co game, the first 15 minutes were outstanding . I think we were 3-0 up by that stage!

Correct and some of the best football I have ever seen us play.
We were standing in the wooden stand on one side of the ground, much stamping of floorboards as the goals went in.

One of The best away performances I have seen, Micky Bullock seemed to win every header that day he was one if not the best header of a ball I have seen in an Os shirt.

Looking at the Head to Head record on Orient v Stoke and vice versa, there is seemingly no December fixtures between the 2 sides since December 1958 when Stoke won 3-2

https://www.11v11.com/teams/stoke-city/ ... %20Orient/

The same website does suggest that on 29 December 1973 ie 50 years ago Orient did beat Fulham 1-0

43 years ago ie 1980, Orient and Fulham did not play each other. In fact between 1979 and 1989 the 2 sides never met

I was right in line with the flight of the ball when Roffey put that shot in, and as soon as it left his foot l knew it was in.
