Wellens mid-table by Christmas (with Orient)
There, I have said it.
I now expect the doom-mongers to weigh in on this thread with lots of doom-mongering about lack of discipline, lack of points, lack of goals, lightweight squad (all valid points which I am sure that our excellent manager, Richie Wellens, is addressing like any excellent manager would aim to do).
Maybe the doom-mongers might even foe me for being ever so slightly optimistic about our chances of seeing our excellent manager (Richie Wellens) get his fairly talented sqaud drilled well enough to grind out a few results to push us up the league after our very challenging start.
I took it as a personal insult to hear Stevenage's anti-Wellens songs on Saturday - I wonder if the doom-mongers on here were singing along too?
And I will be at Exeter on Saturday to cheer on the team and our excellent manager (Richie Wellens) - win, lose or draw. Going there by train and looking forward to supporting them through thick and thin.
Yes, midtable obscurity in time for the King's speech is what I am predicting.
Mongers of doom - over to you.

Re: Wellens mid-table by Christmas (with Orient)
Tend to agree but my certainty level is being tested. I think ten games, around the start of October is a fair place to assess where we are. I think the squad is good enough to be mid table but my concerns over goals and players stepping up to this level might make that statement untrue. But we won’t know that until we are a few months in

In November 2012, we were 5th from bottom in this division and ended up finishing 7th. That Manager, Russell Slade, was quite right - fans have short memories.

Once things settle down injury wise and we can start fielding a settled side I think we will shoot up the table. Middle Eight finish.

Why do you think the goalscorers will score goals, when they've shown no sign presently?
Why do you think the defence will become tight, where at the moment they're leakier than a old colander?
I would love you to be right, but I cant see any reason, any of what you say will happen, so I must be missing something.
Will you enlighten me on what im missing, that suggests we will improve tremendously
Thank You

Re: Wellens mid-table by Christmas (with Orient)
This would do me just fine as would ending the season there. All about avoiding that bottom 8 and any nervous looking over shoulder moments.
Would need to then be more brutal with recruitment to move forward using January window to get a headstart on next season.

This is the one that is wearing thin very quickly though. How far out of condition did the late signings let themselves go to be a month into the season and still well behind the curve? Are other clubs still talking about players doing pre-season a week into September?

Re: Wellens mid-table by Christmas (with Orient)
COYOs - my prediction (and I am still hopeful it will come true) of midtable by Christmas, with Richie Wellens still in charge, is based on the strong performances this season against Wycombe (despite the defeat) and Cambridge mainly, and now we can add to that list the performance against Exeter. Combined with what Richie Wellens has achieved at this club since he replaced Kenny Jackett, plus the efforts of Martin Ling and the board since taking over - we have mostly been on an upwards trajectory. And that the bulk of the squad are L2 Champions who know how to win games of football.ComeOnYouOs wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2023 4:12 pmInteresting post. So combine all of the above with talented players achieving full fitness, other talented players returning from injury, other talented players gaining in confidence/belief, and the management team focussing on the basics of grinding out results then I think we are set fair to get us those points to get us to midtable by Christmas.
Also I believe in the Orient faithful to play a part on a matchday by being in full voice. Amongst only 400 O's fans yesterday, it sounded more like thousands where I was standing behind the goal - full of voice, good humour and vocally willing the team on from the warm-up to the post-match celebrations. There is still a feel good factor from last year that we can help spur the team on with - the arrogant song "We are the champions, who the [expletive] are you?" conveys us fans of expecting great football from the players, so they know that they are accountable to us for great performances. That can't happen every match in a higher league for sure, which is why I am predicting mid-table for Christmas.
I am looking forward to seeing some niggly 1-0 wins over the next few months to push us further up the table. That is well within our grasp.
In hindsight, Richie picked the wrong team vs Stevenage but I agreed with his selection following that dominant Cambridge performance.
Yesterday was very enjoyable - apart from all the train delays to Exeter and back - and if we can produce more of that kind of performance and less of the Stevenage sham (which I think is well within this talented squad's capabilities) then I feel this season will be one of solidifying our place in League One and continuing to look upwards which we have mostly done since Ling, Teague and Travis took over the running of our beloved Leyton Orient.

Re: Wellens mid-table by Christmas (with Orient)
Back in early September, I wrote on here "midtable obscurity in time for the King's speech is what I am predicting" - mostly in exasperated reponse to doom-monger ComeonyouOs' doomy and pitiful prediction of "relegation and Wellens gone by Christmas".
I'd say 16th place on December 23 is pretty solid mid-table.
Looks like COYOs needs to now take a chill pill and have more faith in the squad and in Richie Wellens. I also think COYOs needs to cut down on the doom-mongering, the scare-mongering and the WUM-mongering - whoever COYOs is, he/she is quite a monger!
Back in the real world, Orient's journey to League One consolidation continues... and it is clear we need reinforcements next month to help Richie achieve that. Merry Christmas everybody, and here's to a great 2024!!!

Re: Wellens mid-table by Christmas (with Orient)
It's not quite comfortable mid-table though is it? I'm with Kent Teague that you really want to be in that sunnier 11th / 12th spot not within the bottom 8.
I'd snap your hand off right now to finish in this current position but without reinforcements in January it'll be a real struggle to stay there

Mid-table is what I predicted, gshaw, and that's where we are. Doomy COYOs predicted relegation places with our League 2 championship-winning boss out the door - by Christmas. Bah humbug!

Fair, one place above it having played a game more, looking nervously downwards rather than up on current form

You're going on as if everything has been fine this season. We have been mediocre at best and pretty rubbish most other times. The odd exception which I can think of was the Cambridge performance. Wellens is having an obvious problem with this team after our step up to league one and if we dont watch it we could be in big trouble. It's pointless putting a brave face on things.

No, Chief Crazy, I'm going on as if we are mid-table at Christmas which was my prediction in early September, and lo and behold it has come true. Of course not everything is fine - that is why we are mid-table - but I have faith in the club to bring in the required reinforcements next month to continue the consolidation in League One. No more predictions from me - I'll leave it to the doomers instead to have the last word.

I clearly remember how tough that season was and that's why all I want from this season is survival . We're currently 16th and would gladly take a 16th place finish right now with both hands .Joe315 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 23, 2023 9:53 pm A look at our final league table 2006-7 after promotion from the league below .

Upto the play off loss.
Just don't get how they expect us to compete & win regularly against clubs with double our budget.
Yet we managed a 1 goal loss against Bolton
Who in the same 2006-7 season finished 7th in the
Premier League.
