Re: Israel
Interesting piece, and reflects my view that what we're increasingly witnessing is a result of the transition to a multi-polar global order. Dormant regional powers are reawakening and will seek opportunities to flex their muscles to test global reactions. Eventually, we'll revert to the historic norm of war being the rule rather than the exception. Only with deadlier weapons than before WW2.The Mindsweep wrote: ↑Mon Oct 16, 2023 4:08 pm Interesting piece about the wider context of what's going on

Also, this graph is a good illustration of how the post-war world order, for all its faults (Vietnam, Iraq etc) has been a pretty good deal for most of the world population. Especially since the fall of the Soviet Union and the era of US supremacy. Those who protested American hegemony may come to reflect on the phrase "be careful what you wish for".

Making what up, your response is so puerile I do not know what you mean.
I may have mentioned this earlier but despising the State of Israel is not the same as hating Jews. I doubt you’ll take note of that because it doesn’t suit your narrative but it bears repeating all the same, you tiresome pillock.

Because he doesn’t agree with your hate-filled diatribes?
The clowns are the ones who aren’t calling out Hamas for ramping up this chaos in order to rile up the anti-Israel / anti-semitic intransigents and condemning their own people to death and homelessness in the process.

They contested the 2006 election in Gaza on the basis that they were going to be proper mental and fight the Zionists and not bother with any diplomatic approaches. They subsequently got 44.5% of the vote (Fatah got 41.4%). Because of the FPTP electoral system, this awarded them a working majority. This was when any possibility of a two-state solution effectively ended (although it was already unlikely for a variety of reasons, of which Israel deserves its fair share of the blame).

Re: Israel
The idea of terrorism as a global problem is a creature of the 1970s and 1980s, when first Israel and then the US persuaded themselves and the world that Palestinian defensive violence was not an anti-colonial insistence on self-determination but rather part of an upsurge of world violence that threatened our (western) civilisation.Long slender neck wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 11:05 am Hamas has to go dont they? To hear the UK’s defence secretary shout on the BBC that Hamas must be called “terrorists” is to realise how much damage this fatuous label has done.
The old British empire called its opponents (whether in India, Malaya, Kenya, or Cyprus) terrorists. The description does not end debate even if its users hope that it will. The past victims of colonial aggression in the Global South know this, even if we do not.

Re: Israel
Correct. Although, at the risk of falling into the usual circular arguments on this topic, Israel's position was explainable (even if we feel its not justifiable) by its own security concerns. But I see no point in debating that point any further anymore.Max B Gold wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 1:07 pmThe main reason being that Israel refused to stand by the agreement they signed with the PLO to return the land occupied after the 1967 war.Dunners wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 12:56 pmHamas are elected.Long slender neck wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 11:05 am Hamas has to go dont they? Anyway, since 2014 Hamas have given up all pretence of being a Palestinian national liberation movement and are now an openly Islamist revolutionary group sponsored by the Iranian regime. And they are not alone. Other similar groups now exist throughout the region, including Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, Azerbaijan and Iraq. There may even be similar groups forming in Turkey.
It's becoming increasingly difficult to see a diplomatic way out of this mess.
