Labour are terrified of a rerun of the 1992 General Election. Hence the softly softly approach. Media such as The Sun is less influential these days, and a lot of commentators fancy a change for a change's sake. I would like to see a certain East London MP charged with rape on the run up to the next Election. That would screw Sleazy Richy's Party nicely.

Appalling turnouts in both by-elections, remains to be seen if that many Tory voters are actually switching to Labour or just staying at home.

Come the General Election, they'll be back voting for their own people again.

Having said that, the Tories look like theyre certs to lose the GE, though not by as many seats as these two by-election results would suggest

Low turnout or not, these were supposed to be two of the safest Tory seats going. This is like the Tories winning Hammersmith or Bristol.

In mid-bedfordshire they managed to lose despite a pretty big lib dem vote splitting the anti Tory vote. It's easy to imagine those voters rallying around labour at the GE now that they've shown they are the best placed party to beat the Tories.

Even if people aren't enthusiastic about Labour, I'm still surprised by how deep the hate for the Tories seems to be going.
