It's coming home (2028)

Post by Dunners »

It's been confirmed that the UK and Ireland bid is the only bid left in contention for Euro 2028 after Turkey has withdrawn.

It will be interesting to have all home nations automatically qualify so we get to bet on who gets knocked out first. And we all know who that will be.

Heh. Given how we handled things for the last final at Wembley, I'm sure UEFA are delighted with this outcome.

I'm assuming England won that Final.

They certainly won the argument.

Don't be too hard on yourselves. You'll get to play all your games at Wembley and if the Ukraine situation has been resolved, you might get a friendly Russian linesman to smooth the way

And Scotland will be the only team in Europe not to qualify due to UEFA's continued expansion of the event.

I'm in two minds about this trend for different counties to co-host international tournaments. I can see how it is an opportunity for smaller nations to benefit, but some of the combinations are across such a distance I just don't see how it will have the same sense of occasion for visiting fans.

Post-Southgate, hopefully. Decent bloke, but I can not see him winning a final.

It's a nice idea for the 2030 World Cup to have a game in Uruguay to make the 100th anniversary but, if you want to do that, maybe just hold the f*cking tournament in South America? Imagine being in the opening game in Montevideo and then having to fly back to the Iberian peninsula or Morocco for your next match? Madness.

On the other hand, spreading the games across multiple countries does I guess reduce the need for individual countries to build new white elephant stadia and infrastructure at massive expense. Even FIFA seem to have learned from what happened in Brazil.

England have gone and done a Labour, and stuck with a leader on the basis that he did better than expected (but still lost).

Think you'll find there's a few people who though it came home last year.

I do not know why, but I prefer watching England playing away in major tournaments. Except for 1966, of course, when the world seemed to be a better place.

Yes. A good opportunity to get a few ticks for grounds otherwise difficult to go to with Orient.
