From Brighton's point of view better to get £4m than worrying about paying 20% to us. Random moves as you allude can not happen now. THe FA look at all fees to check on stuff like this Brighton lost more money on this deal than us
Next you'll be telling me football is far to all teams because FFP exists and is effective

Why should they get a little windfall and break from sipping into their pockets after slagging fans off for not spending money at the club? f*** them
With fan attitudes like that, its easy to appreciate why Bechetti said exactly the same to fans of this club.
Demanding fans only give their money to the club on match days?
He never demanded as you state it. Go listen again. He did not slag off fans either as your initial post suggests.
As has been alluded to elsewhere, Nigel didn't come across as well as he usually does (it was probably his worst interview) but he didn't slag anyone off and he ALWAYS has the best interest of the club at heart IMO.

But he did slag the fans off. He started off the interview by slagging off fans that watch games on-line through non-official means (even though it is not possible to watch most games on-line through official means). Then he ended - having mentioned during the interview multiple times the amount of money he has put into the club - by slagging off fans that spend money on the high street (specifically mentioning the Coach and Horses) rather than in the ground.
That's not to say he doesn't have the club at heart. Of course he does.

For a boarder, you have a very low bar of what you consider slagging off.

You have got to be joking? You're standing up for how Bechetti behaved? Come on, you're better than that. You don't mean it.
Where did I say I stood up for him? I compared Biggsy's attitude to Bechetti's. If fans are going to say f88k them about owners then owners in return will say f88k them to fans.
If I had £2m a year to throw into this - or any - club then I don't think I could unless I developed a skin far thicker than a Rhino's.

Travis saved this club from becoming extinct, end of.

Implying the fans shouldn’t be spending outside the ground is in effect, telling them to spend it in the ground.
He may have the best interest of the club at heart (and I believe that) but since Devlin came to the club, the fans in the ground are the least important.

What’s his beef with the coach & horses? A club owner slagging off the closest pub (and local business) to their ground is very odd behaviour.

Is it because they don't do diabetes inducing sugar coated deep fried junk food doughnuts? It's not America in there.
I agree.
I think, especially being as he is young, single, fit and talented, Alzate is looking out for himself and listening to his agent as to how to get the best deal financially for the years ahead. Different all together to less talented and older players who are very pleased to get a job offer from another football club when their current contract comes to an end.
Yup from his POV
- if he knows he has no future at Brighton he can get a better sign on bonus as a free agent
- if he thinks there's still a chance to stay at Brighton better to go out on loan then a permanent sale
From Brighton's POV if there's any way to avoid paying Orient a big chunk of money they'll take it. Don't be surprised if there's a random player move between those clubs at some point.
Relying on sell-on fees to justify the academy just seems so naive given the many ways to get around them.

TBF Brighton can afford to lose more money than us……….It must be a bit of a blow to Nigel and Kent to lose our on this.
This brings up the subject again, of, is it worth running an academy?
There are two factors to consider. First, Does the club make money ( profit) from having an acadamy, and secondly, do we produce enough talent that actually plays for the club for a considerable time
my view is no and no
We let academy players go very cheaply imo. Alzate went for £200k to 400k, depending who you speak to..........hardly a life changing sum in this day and age
How many players do we get from the academy? . Happe is one, there's been a few who have played a handful of games, but not many in relation to the number of lads that start
I realise others may have a different view, but thats mine
You were crying about people not bigging up Sotiriou on another thread so weird that you'd ignore him as an academy success story here. Sweeney is also getting regular first team minutes.
How much do you think we should have got for Alzate? He'd played about 10 games and we'd just been relegated out of the League, on the verge of bankruptcy. Who was going to give us a million quid for him?

Then if you take the knock-on costs into account such as the extra training pitch, all the coaching staff etc.
Would we even need a training ground if it was just the first team using it? With our hard wearing hybrid pitch couldn't we just use that and save millions to spend on the ground instead?

G Shaw,
That is an interesting point. So after taking all these comments into consideration, it would seem that over say the last 5 years or so, that on a pure income versus outlay, that having a football youth players academy is a loss maker money wise. Same of course could well apply to having a Leyton Orient ladies football team ? So maybe running football teams for the ladies and also the young players academy is more to do with promoting the club in the local community sense than it is for the purpose of merely just making money ?

If we have a youth set up & we do , there are rules & regulations that adhere to that. As an example where at brisbane road would we put an indoor pitch if we only used Brisbane rd , would we put it next to our state of the art gymnasium ?
It's been talked about to death on here before but scrapping the youth system to sign 1-2 more senior players a season would go against what a lot of fans think the club is about and would be damaging for our local reputation as a community club. Knowing that we provide a route into the professional game for kids, a lot whom come from backgrounds where it's harder to access opportunities, is something we'd be foolish to throw away, especially if the club is serious about growing.
London is producing so many talented young players at the moment and if we aren't capturing enough of that, then we need to change our approach, not ditching the academy entirely. Luckily, the owners have spoken about an improved youth system as a big driver of wanting a new training ground, so I reckon it's not being considered.

In light of Nigel's comments the other day and this latest payout falling through it's the kind of thing that needs to be looked at with a critical eye imo.
If there's a limited pot of income for the club and all the requirements to run an academy cost you more than it brings in, is it then helping the club succeed or holding it back?
Nigel has also tried multiple times to stir up interest in the academy but people don't bite, whether it's watching the games, that "one of our own" sponsorship thing etc. Is the value whole "community" thing just over hyped? Did you cheer Ekpiteta any less because we nabbed him from another club at 21(ish) or El Miz because he's not our player?
