Looking at Grimsby and Morecambe by train and they’re coming out at around £100 return. Ridiculous

Train ticket prices are a con. It’s more expensive for me to go to Waterloo than Bath, a much longer distance. Premium for going to London

Didn’t know if you were aware but cheaper train tickets don’t go on sale until 12 weeks before date of travel. That would explain why the morecambe ones are still expensive. The Grimsby ones are cheaper now however so you might want to try again for those and wait until next week to try again for cheaper Morecambe train tickets 👍

Don't understand how they set the prices. Went from Stratford to Ipswich last month, £80 return. Went to Norwich a week later from Liverpool Steet and it cost half that. Both were bought a day before travelling.
For a similarly timed train journey in Italy last year (Padova to Venice) cost €5.25!!

What ?

Why would the uk pay for all the repairs of tracks etc
& let the foreign owned train companies earn all the profit.

Stupid idea to re-nationalise.
Its like saying lets do a deal with the u.s
after leave .
🤣

Now you know why the roads are so busy :D
I live in the Greater Anglia area as long as you buy in advance it’s quite cheap.
I think they advertise Norwich, for example, for £10 which I guess is one way but still not bad.

Just did Witham to Norwich return with my daughter (looking at UEA for next year) for £25 first class return for both of us. We both have rail cards but booked in advance and tickets were £10 return and an upgrade to first class for £5.

I use the Greater Anglia ticket site we have also done Reading for £28.50 return and Bristol for £38.00 return, booked each of them about ten weeks in advance and by choosing selected trains with a limited number of cheap seats got some really good prices.

Seems if you split the journey up ticket wise Euston to MK then MK to Stoke then Stoke to Macclesfield and return is a lot cheaper
Bizzare thing is you can stay on the same train all the way to Macclesfield then back to Euston

On the Trainline app
I have a 1/3 off railcard
Didn’t you say your going first class
Just an FYI but best to use National Rail Enquiries site - they don't charge the booking fee that Trainline do. Same fares but no add-ons.

It was explained to me that Morecambe and Grimsby (Cleethorpes) are so expensive because you have to use two rail providers (Virgin I think to Doncaster and Lancaster, and then another respectively). Doesn't make it right though.

As for Exeter, going on my own currently costs me £87.

If I take my two kids it drops down to £85.

So £87 for taking up one seat or £85 for taking up 3.

The Grimsby trip is a lot cheaper if you take Hull trains or Grand Central rather than LNER.
