Re: Islas Malvinas
The indigenous population of the islands seem to want the place to be called The Falkland Islands. But for some reason, some non-residents seem to think that the will of an imperialist colonial state located about 1,000 miles away, with a recent history of fascist military dictatorship and invasion tendencies, should take priority.

I thought the only indigenous population were penguins? Does that same principle apply to other land masses, such as Australia, or the entire continent of America? The Mindsweep wrote: ↑Fri Jul 21, 2023 9:55 amI thought the only indigenous population were penguins? Had never actually thought about it from that point of view, Dunners. I can't think of anywhere else where the present day international community (or at least, large parts of it) say to a population "stuff what you want, we're calling you this".

Re: Islas Malvinas
To be fair, The Falklands is just another one of those things to which the British left go full-on crank mode. The default position often taken is to be sympathetic to the Argentinians.
And yet:
And yet:
- There was no previous population displaced by the initial colonisers. The Islands were as empty as Australia was when the first peoples arrived.
- Prior to the war, the population expressed an overwhelming desire to remain a British territory.
- There was British political interest in a pragmatic solution of shared sovereignty of the islands with Argentina, possibly leading to full assignment should the population want that in the future (the UK government didn’t want the expense).
- But Argentina (which is itself a colonial project from when Iberian conquerors slaughtered the previous inhabitants and stole their lands – but let’s conveniently overlook that) decided to invade with a military force and occupy the islands against the wishes of the population.
- They did this to distract their own citizens from their oppression and political and financial incompetence, not because of any just cause.
- The British forces set sail, one thing led to another, and the Argentinians had their arses handed to them on a plate.
- Even the sinking of the Belgrano, which is often seized upon as an example of how awful Britain is, was confirmed as a legitimate target by its own Captain (but let's also conveniently overlook that).
- The Argentinian forces then f*cked off home and eventually the military dictatorship collapsed.
- The local population were liberated, and their resolve to remain British is now even firmer and any notion of shared sovereignty has now been pushed back for generations. All thanks to Argentina's reckless behavour.
- But Britain bad.

Re: Islas Malvinas
Point 1 is not wrong. There was no indigenous population before European settlers arrived in 1764.

Re: Islas Malvinas
We all know why this topic has sprung up it"s because the EU called the Falklands The Malvinas . Well British lives were lost defending the people who lived on those islands . If WW3 ever breaks out I hope the first nuke lands right on Brussels .

Re: Islas Malvinas
Not harsh at all and anyway the example you gave is different from Falklands situation . Fair enough , I haven't liked the EU for many years but because of their attitude towards us since 2016 I now feel I'm beginning to hate them .

Re: Islas Malvinas
The French have never forgiven us for being awarded the Prime Meridian - Greenwich rather than Paris (rhymes with Arris ).

Re: Islas Malvinas
One of the strangest organisations to ever exist. Widely known they don't even know how many people work for it. The epitome of snouts in the trough no doubt.RedDwarf 1881 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 21, 2023 11:13 am We all know why this topic has sprung up it"s because the EU called the Falklands The Malvinas . Back to the topic, in 2014, the (human) residents (not the penguins, for the avoidance of doubt for some on here) voted in a census of 99.8% to 0.2% in favour of staying alligned with the UK.
The Scottish Independence/Brexit vote it was not.
Unless some are insisting that Argentian alignment is forced on the 99.8% for some weird reason, surely that ends the matter.

Re: Islas Malvinas
I've spoken to the chief of staff for the penguin regiment and he says that he is rather fond of tea and British cheese so definitely identified as British as well.
The EU are on a wind up and the usual gammons have fallen for it. Their reticence in any response to Russia rolling up to their own doorstep suggests they're unlikely to be getting involved in any shenanigans in the southern hemisphere so hardly any need to worry.
I wonder if there's any domestic issues at home the Argentinans want to distract from? While also providing some red meat for our rather sub standard government to try and posture over.

Modern Germany is pre dated by the the Falklands. whenever people want to rewrite borders it's always good to ask them exactly what year everything was perfect.

Ah it's just a WUM. You'd have thought they'd have more important things to concern themselves with, but clearly not.
The long winter evenings must fly by in Bruxelles that's for sure.
Perhaps the Mods can get Ursula von der Leyen onto the MB as she's so up for a high quality WUM like this very one.

Once again a disrespectful post on here to stir up the sh-t. Perhaps you should ask all the widows, service men that were injured in the conflict, I know drop Simon Western a text and tell him your views. Sort of post that tuffers or one of his close numptys would put on thereThe Mindsweep wrote: ↑Fri Jul 21, 2023 7:49 am About time the correct name for the place is being recognised
