To me, the real story, is that people can spunk so much money on a trivial & dangerous mission. It is is similar to the space tourist nonsense. Pretty obscene that some people have so much money they can waste it on such projects.

The money they “waste” ends up in the wage packets of all the people who design and build the thing, the crew who man the boats and manufactures who obtain the raw materials from suppliers who pay their workers to get them and many more besides, like logistics. The whole supply chain and probably a lot of jobs are supported by this ‘waste’.

These are the same sort of people that f*** about on Bezos and Bransons spaceships. My thoughts go out to their families but don't try and make out they're doing good.

Agree with this, but at the same time, you’d have to really lack empathy to not have a human response to what these people might be going through as we speak…
(while, granted, as a society there’s also a lot more suffering going on that deserves this level of focus, too)

From what I read it takes roughly 2 hours to descend to the seabed where the Titanic sits . Apparently communication was lost after about 1hr 30mins . This means the sub didn’t reach the seabed in the first place. Sadly I think there’s been a catastrophic hull breach and it’s been crushed. The pressure at that depth is incredible. If that’s happened the submarine will never be found.

The titanic hasn’t been crushed because it is entirely filled with and surrounded with water, and so the pressure on any given section is perfectly balanced. If there was anything on board - or indeed any rooms - that were watertight but not strong enough to withstand the pressure, they will have been crushed under the pressure.

The submarine won’t have equilibrium between internal and external pressure, so if the structural integrity is compromised, they’re f*cked.

Apparently though, there is some doubt as to what the impact of massive pressure would be on human bodies, considering they are mostly water. As far as I recall, there’s some evidence that humans can actually do better in high pressure situations (not the crucial penalty type) than previously thought.


There’s also some very, very horrible stories about some of the pioneering deep sea divers. Like where depressurisation in the helmet has meant that a few lucky people have had their entire skeletons instantly stripped to the bone and sucked into their helmet. Not the most fun way to have your last few seconds

It’s already sunken so the water pressure inside the wreck is the same as the outside.

Just imagine: Two parallel sets of five human beings who are trapped together in ghastly engineered tubes. Each of the tubes were created with the objective of exploring and expanding the boundaries of humanity's knowledge and inquisitiveness but, sadly, both are being commonly used for far more mundane and trivial purposes.

Each group has been thrown together through a shared interest and both of these groups have freely chosen to embark on a journey which began in hope, humour and excitement. But something has malfunctioned; the occupants of the tubes are trapped, they endure increasingly unbearable claustrophobia and then seemingly inevitable asphyxiation - a truly awful demise. All they have now are their memories of happier times and the company of strangers who share a common interest.

The fate of one of the groups will be determined relatively quickly. The fate of the other has been playing out tragically for decades.

Anyone, anywhere in the world with internet access whose curiosity is piqued by the plight of those poor people trapped at the bottom of the sea can obtain minute by minute "updates" should they so chose.

Anyone foolish enough to retain any residual curiosity about the other group would not be surprised to discover them still engaged in their eternal ballet; pirouetting around each other relentlessly seeking to enhance their social capital by surpassing each other's callousness, nihilism and cruelty.

I’m not certain who the second group you mention is meant to represent, but if you’d said the choices to gawp at/save were the 5 obscenely rich dudes or the hundreds packed onto that capsized trawler last week I think I know my answer. But it interests me that our media (and its users) is keener on the other one…
