This Is Goling To Get Ugly But......
Why was Jobi McAnuff given a 1 year contract extension on 20/21 May when is should have been known he had a serious groin problem - a "hang-over" from the 2018 / 2019 season? Perhaps "imbedded" players are not given medicals before their contracts are extended? It now appears that he is going to be out approx. 8 to 10 weeks before he is match fit, ( 4 weeks post operation + 4 to 5 weeks to get to match fitness.)
Jobi did a great job last season but sentiment is a very poor reason to make a business decision. We have seen a couple of sentimental decisions made by the club recently e. g. James Alibi and James Dayton. I am sure that Justin, R.I.P., would not have agree to all these decisions, although he obviously agreed to the McAnuff one, ( nobody's perfect!)
What do we do now? Bring in a loan signing to cover right wing / right midfield for 2 months? Extra expense etc.!
It seems Jobi can't lose on the deal that the club has given him. He now gets paid handsomely to recover from a long term injury and operation AND is able to add to his coaching experience / coaching qualifications, ( apparently he has UEFA "B" but is now pursuing UEFA "A" and UEFA "Pro",) all at Orient's expense.
I suppose my above comments all end up as criticisms of Martin Ling who is ultimately responsible for these decisions,. ( and who recently had his own contract extended.) Martin has done a lot of things right over the past 2 years but that does not mean he should be above criticism. He has made some mistakes. More so recently
I feel sympathy for Kent Teague and Nigel Travis who are financing these excesses / mistakes.
I am a Leyton Orient supporter, not a Jobi McAnuff, James Alibi, James Dayton or a Martin Ling supporter. My concern is for the club I love, ( and my father and grand-father loved.)
Some people are "taking liberties" here.
O.K. I have my" hard hat" on and am ready for the "flak" that is gonna come my way.
I am not a fence sitter !

We’re ok providing we don’t get early injuries and suspensions. Bit thin as a squad but the core is ok. We trust to luck until players are fit.

Re: This Is Goling To Get Ugly But......
McAnuff perhaps may always have been seen as a part coach part playing role given his leadership with the squad last season?
Given his positive influence and presence at the club I don't see much wrong with giving him a contract. However it's incredibly naive to not get adequate cover in knowing Jobi might be suffering for his efforts at the tail end of last season. And no, before any of the usual suspects start, 3 CMs is not adequate cover.

Re: This Is Going To Get Ugly But......
My opinion only:
(1) Allowing Alibi to be taken off the transfer list.
(2) Dayton should have been given a 6 month extension not 12 months. Some clubs would have terminated his contract on 30 June. For example, Stevenage did that to Gorman when he was injured.
I also said that Ling "had done a lot of things right" over the past 2 years. I am not a "Ling hater."
Re: This Is Goling To Get Ugly But......
I don't view it this way.
I think Jobi's contract already had in mind that he would be spending more of this season coaching and learning. So, we'd be paying him anyway.
We also don't know if already took precautions, ie weighting the contract on appearances.
His learning is not an expense for us, but an investment. I thought the cost of a UEFA A was about £10k, so I don't think it would take much improvement in his ability for the club to recoup that in the form of more effective training for players.
I do think the operation is poorly timed, or not prepared for. Assuming we play three in midfield, we only have Clay and Wright now for the deeper positions, I do not regard Gorman as a decent replacement here, his skills are more attacking and less on the defensive side.

Re: This Is Goling To Get Ugly But......
I guess it all depends on the contract. In all likelihood, giving an extension (on National League terms) with all that was known was considered a superior option to bringing in an outsider who might take time to settle and cost more (League 2 terms). Obviously McAnuff is gaining coaching experience, but he also brings a lot of experience and know how of his own to the role that is beneficial to the club. If Embleton struggles this season then its possible that McAnuff could step up and be manager.
I am sure Ling, Teague and Travis discuss all of this at length and look to take the best path. I don't think anyone is taking liberties.

Re: This Is Goling To Get Ugly But......
If JE wanted to give McAnuff a new deal despite of his injury, I have no reason to query it, neither would Ling. Think it's clear to see over the summer months Jobi's worth off the pitch as well as on it. A pointless original post.

Re: This Is Goling To Get Ugly But......
Given what happened with Justin my take is that it's important to retain experienced leaders in the squad and Jobi provides that. And yes we do need cover but that probably isn't down to naivety. More to do with budget.gshaw wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 12:52 pm McAnuff perhaps may always have been seen as a part coach part playing role given his leadership with the squad last season?

As a coach I believe Jobi has a lot to offer the club and when fully fit he will perform well in L2.

Jobi has a massive amount to offer the club. But his availability on the pitch was likely to be limited and should have been covered. That it has not is poor

Re: This Is Goling To Get Ugly But......
I view Jobis operation with incredulity . He has had this problem for at least 4 months, and 2 days before the season starts, he has an operation!!!!
Had he had this surgery in May, he would have been fit to play by the end of August/early September.
As for Alabi coming off the transfer list.....I too am mystified. Justin put him on that list, because in his opinion, alabi was no bloody good. If Justin was still here, Im certain Alabi would still be on the transfer list.
As we all know, the squad is still very thin on numbers of seasoned pros, and with 48 hours to go to kick off, Im a little concerned now........again Im sure if Justin was still here, we wouldnt have been in that situation either.
We are really missing Justin, and as time goes by, we will miss him more and more. At the time of his passing, various people at the club said we would continue to do things Justins way, but within a few weeks, things are being done very much against Justins way.

I presume they didnt know about the injury or thought it would not require surgery. He will probably be able to do his coaching job whilst recovering.koppio wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 12:25 pm Why was Jobi McAnuff given a 1 year contract extension on 20/21 May when is should have been known he had a serious groin problem - a "hang-over" from the 2018 / 2019 season? Re: This Is Goling To Get Ugly But......
We don't know the details of any of the contracts. I find it hard to believe two business successful business men who own the club would throw money down the pan, especially as they appear reluctant spend it on new players.
I imagine both contracts are weighted in favour of Orient given neither player would have been in high demand or likely to greatly increase salary elsewhere.
I am puzzled by the Alabi situation though, I am thinking it's likely we couldn't sell him and didn't want to just write off a loss, so may as well keep him here for league trophy games etc.

I don't think it would be right to keep doing things exactly the same as a previous manager, and think it's likely he himself would have changed things up in the league.ComeOnYouOs wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 1:12 pm I view Jobis operation with incredulity . I also recall being in a very similar situation regarding fans concerns around squad depth and positional weaknesses last summer when Edinburgh was here.
What things are you specifically referring to other then Alabi or an operation that clearly wasnt deemed necessary previously?

Re: This Is Goling To Get Ugly But......
The Alabi debate has been done to death- he was taken off the list because we weren't able to move him on, because he wanted to stay here for various reasons. It made sense to take him off the list and utilise the assets that he does bring.
Dayton was Edinburgh's choice. I was surprised but we will wait to see how that pans out.
If you had asked 100 Orient fans after the Trophy final if they would keep McAnuff for next season, even if he would miss the first month or 6 weeks, I'd imagine 99 would offer him a new contract.

IMO Jobi will now be there in the coaching set up to replace the gravitas and experience that JE had. RE doesn’t have the PL experience, but that’s his only weakness IMO. With some players sometimes turning into prima donnas, in the background I think it will turn out that Jobi is the one getting those in line and proverbially banging heads together if needed. And playing the occasional game.

I don't believe the management are being naiive at all. It could be the case that they are waiting for the right player to become available. I'll be concerned if come the close of the window we don't have another Central Midfielder. We all know we are light in that area, the men in charge will know that. I'm confident they'll get someone in.gshaw wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 12:52 pm McAnuff perhaps may always have been seen as a part coach part playing role given his leadership with the squad last season?
