Many voters that previously voted Labour unconditionally, didn't vote Labour this time, for a number of reasons.

It won't work. A large section of socialists in the Labour Party won't vote for them in their current iteration. I don't just mean the angry activist Brigade who are forever banging on about the betrayal of JC but normal non activist leftists too.

Labour has attacked and expelled the Left and stupidly think they will still get their votes because at election time it will be all hands to the pump to get rid of the Tories.

That call is wearing thin and the expected response will fail. There's more than one way to get rid of the Tories than voting for the Red ones.

I checked it myself, its mainly Greens (who won't vote Tory) and local independent groups who only stand at local elections. The Nazis and UKIP lot now vote Tory but will also be able to vote Reform at the GE, so Tories could leak some votes to them

If they just built on the land currently being used for golf courses it would solve the housing issue in a heartbeat. Plus having the added benefit of ending "chip chip, putt putt" golfing bores.

So much of the green belt is a myth borne out of sentimental Tories thinking it's a way of protecting a green and pleasant land. We have a situation in the UK where cities like Cambridge, which is one of the most economically productive places in the world, can't really grow because of planning constraints. No other country would do this and we wouldn't have done 150 years ago.

But if they really want to sort things, forcing use it or lose it rules on developers and curbing ridiculous land speculation that rests on a model of ever increasing land acquisition costs is what the cities need. The state should be funding infrastructure improvements through compulsory purchase of land at current use value and then capturing the difference as a result of improved transport links. That money currently is pissed away in the hands of developers and home owners.

It's in neither party's interests to fix the private ownership market because people in this country equate declining house prices to declining wealth. Best you can hope for is modest reforms to private rental and incremental increases in affordable house building, neither of which do that much for lower middle class types who are increasingly the ones stuffed and the most likely to move abroad when they realise what a rip off housing here is.

The whole housing model in this country is unsustainable. In reality it was only a short period of between the mid 60's to around 2009 when owing a home was at least possible for most. This period is well and truly over. We now have a property owning minority, which is ageing, and governments who are still focusing on policy that was for that era. When people on relatively good incomes are struggling to even find accommodation to rent, on many occasions sharing the properties with friends and colleagues, let alone being in a position to buy then there is a big problem. At some point affordability will end and after a short period where it seems that housing becomes more affordable when property prices fall, as soon as costs rise again then it will collapse like a stone. Big problem, but it's coming.

Where are these lower middle class types going to move to?

Abroad. Anecdotal but a lot of my age group who fit that bill are looking at emigrating because the cost of living here is ridiculous, the economy is tanking and they have skills that are in demand elsewhere.
