Of course the logical way round it is to offer him a better extended contact with a an extremely high buy out clause or no buy out clause at all .

Provided the player wants to sign it. He knows there's interest from higher up now and being out of contract brings sign-on bonuses. No doubt the agent is already working out how to maximise their earnings too

Thinking about it, I expect him to play today and be with us at the start of the season. A new, improved, contract will be put on the table with the inevitable get out clause. January may be different. If fairness we will always struggle to hold on to our best up and coming players so sometimes it makes sense to get what you can, when you can, and use funds to build the squad from talented young NL players or those who didn’t make it at a higher level.

Why don't you understand this? They wouldn't sign the contract if that was the case.

That is exactly the case. A contract is two way and if we try to put an unreasonable release clause in place the player simply would not sign it. The eventually go for free. Why do people think the club can set the rules. Players have brains and agents looking after them and not the club. The club doesn’t hold all the cards.
