Re: To Serve and Protect
Defund the police" is a slogan that supports removing funds from police departments and reallocating them to non-policing forms of public safety and community support, such as social services, youth services, housing, education, healthcare and other community resources.Story of O wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 11:48 am So how does defunding sort out the mess that is the Met?
Activists who use the phrase may do so with varying intentions; some seek modest reductions, while others argue for full divestment as a step toward the abolition of contemporary police services.
Activists who support the defunding of police departments often argue that investing in community programs could provide a better crime deterrent for communities; funds would go toward addressing social issues, like poverty, homelessness, and mental disorders.
Police abolitionists call for replacing existing police forces with other systems of public safety, like housing, employment, community health, education, and other programs.
Re: To Serve and Protect
As MB Gold (inadvertantly) says; it’s a slogan that’s self defeating, and contains some extreme positions that mean that anyone reasonable can’t in good conscience support it as a blanket statement. It’s more geared towards creating a social media “in group” than in winning people over.
Police reform - and disbandment and root & branch rebuilding of some police forces - is necessary. “Defund the police” is moronic, and alienates even those who would get on board with campaigning *for* addressing social issues through other means where possible.

So what do those who want to disband the police think should be in its place?

I didn't say it I C&P'd it from Wiki in the Dunnerist style.CEB wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 12:40 pm As MB Gold (inadvertantly) says; it’s a slogan that’s self defeating, and contains some extreme positions that mean that anyone reasonable can’t in good conscience support it as a blanket statement. I do however agree that it's a silly way to describe the need for the Met to be disbanded and have a new democratically controlled service replace it in conjunction with the additional services mentioned in the Wiki extract.

Re: To Serve and Protect
Shouldn't be an "either, or" though should it. We ought to have "fit for purpose" services across policing and all aspects of social care, housing, education etc.

There are some who use it as a synonym for reform. There are others who essentially are anti the concept of policing at all, and believe that public services and support could replace them entirely. It’s naive deluded nonsense

Why do you think The hOff is a big ol' racist?
Re: To Serve and Protect
IMO the met should absolutely be disbanded and replaced with a new organisation.
The Paul Storey thing really upset me if I’m honest. This is a guy who gleefully made my (and a few others) teenage years a misery, and was on record for it - I just don’t buy that he then kept a lid on that until years later. There’ll be people with stories about him, and who reported him, for years. The police likely saw those as assets, not liabilities.

Re: To Serve and Protect
I suspect that if they did prosecute every bent cop the Courts would grind to a halt and the prisons would be bursting at the seems. So probably not in the "public interest" to break the system.StillSpike wrote: ↑Thu May 11, 2023 9:10 pm "The Crown Prosecution Service decided not to press charges against the officers."

Hmm. Not so sure about this one. I'm going to wager the little scrote was well overdue a bit of a slap.Max B Gold wrote: ↑Thu May 11, 2023 4:35 pm https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/202 ... ing-arrest

Re: To Serve and Protect
If they hadn't lied about it, as is the default for most coppers, they'd still be in a job.

The police *should* be the group most able to deal with a little scrote overdue a slap without the slapTRUMP Plumbing wrote: ↑Fri May 12, 2023 3:44 pmHmm. Not so sure about this one.
