Re: Beeb Gags Lineker
This isn’t the greatest scandal in the world but he clearly isn't the cleverest tool in the box. His tax avoidance scams deserve much more attention, but as a Jew I find his comments comparing the present government to the Nazis in the 1930’s deeply offensive. He used to play for Spurs, he should have known better.

Genuine question, Why?
If more people had taken a stand against the rhetoric used by the NSDAP from 28 onwards, we may not have reached the depths of depravity inflicted on millions in the 40’s.

I don't understand why saying the language used by the Government is similar to that used in the 1930s would be offensive. It's a statement of fact, unlike your assertion that he "compared the Government to the Nazis".

If that is not a drunken statement then what is?

Re: Beeb Gags Lineker
Hahaha, I forgot about your strange little "I know your Twitter handle" obsession. Seems like most of the BBC Sports department agreed with me as it goes but, pray tell, what relevance does that have to my post above, which was what I asked about? Is any post after 10pm likely to be drink fuelled? Would suggest that says more about you tbh if that's your only reasoning.StockholmO wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 2:14 am‘anyone presenting or commentating on MotD is a scab.’

So anyone with a counter view to you is ‘drunk’ at the time of making a counter-statement?StockholmO wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 2:14 am‘anyone presenting or commentating on MotD is a scab.’

Even if it were not a statement of fact, you’d think that normalisation of the idea that it’s OK to spot parallels would be seen as unambiguously a good thing, and that if statements are made that are without foundation, then they can be argued against, not shut down as self evidently “offensive”

Re: Beeb Gags Lineker
Like too many issues, this has turned to more or less pointless MB in-fighting.
Re: Beeb Gags Lineker
It’s interesting, this, cos it seems like Caca is asking for someone to post comparable German statements.
But that seems to me to be obviously the wrong way round.
It’s (I would imagine) indisputable - and not even in question here - that Germany in the thirties engaged in scaremongering, heightened language against vulnerable people. So that’s taken as read.
So all that’s up for debate is whether this government’s policies and language are “not dissimilar”. But we already know which policies and language Lineker was criticising. So surely (for once) Caca should be doing his own work and demonstrating the lack of similarity?

As a non-right wing Zionist jew I’m extremely happy to see Gary stand up to this sort of language. It’s what oppressors use all over the word to chip away at any idea that one race or religion or colour are going to make your life worse. It causes fear and division. We needed more people like Gary in the 30s and 40s rather than indifference.

Re: Beeb Gags Lineker
I know the Nazi's did, but I'm looking for specific examples of what they did and said so I can see if it is comparable. Surely, there has not been this media frenzy without someone actually analysing the 'facts'? Sounds like you are dodging the issue ceb. GL is saying its comparable- evidence please.CEB wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 8:39 am It’s interesting, this, cos it seems like Caca is asking for someone to post comparable German statements.

Re: Beeb Gags Lineker
Indeed. And that would be right if this government was anything like the National Socialists of the 1930’s. 500,000 net immigration last year which smashes the record of anything under a Labour government or past Tory governments. I would imagine this year will be close to the same. Since Labour left power the conservatives have added 10 million people to the population of the UK. Yeah, those bloomin Nazis eh, bringing in all these people.OTF Photography Ltd wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 9:04 am As a non-right wing Zionist jew I’m extremely happy to see Gary stand up to this sort of language. But doesn't this highlight the point being made? It's not about their actions, it's about their rhetoric. If the Tories are so pro-immigration (which, I agree, they are), then what could be their motivation for using the kind of language, dog whistles, nudges and winks? And not just Tory MPs, but their network of backers, supporters, grifters etc?
Also, just on a "told you so" point - I always said Brexit wasn't about reducing immigration. it was about changing immigration. Anyone who voted to leave the EU for that reason has been well and truly taken for a mug.

Re: Beeb Gags Lineker
They use the language because there are a rump of 10-15% of the population that float between the Tories and whatever hard right party are in vogue at the time. If the Tories can’t get them onboard they can’t win elections. It’s no different to Starmer who will take a knee and not define a women in deference to the left wing but in reality his flag is firmly planted in the centre ground. The issue with politics in this country is that floating voters in a tiny number of constituencies decide elections. Perhaps that’s not an issue. It keeps people like me well away from parliament.
Agree with what you say though.

Re: Beeb Gags Lineker
even if it were true that they only use the rhetoric as an electoral strategy - it’s still completely legitimate and necessary to note where that rhetoric has been deployed before.
