Just a case of the Tories judging others by their own, very low, standards.

A tad slippery taking notes in the cabinet office while waiting to go out and bat for the other side.

Having said that, silly move by Labour right now. It was always going to be spun in the way it is and acts as a distraction to Hancocks WhatsApp messages.

The fact that Sue Gray has joined the Labour party months after conducting an independent inquiry into Partygate is not an indication of any bias in that inquiry. She was a civil servant at the time and bound to follow the civil service impartiality rules and would have done so with honesty and integrity.

If she then goes on to work for Sir Kier and the Labour Party it doesn't mean she was Labour before, and suggestions in the press that she was a "left wing activist" are ridiculous.

In any case, I think the appointment still has to be approved by the PM as there's a two year grace period between leaving a senior civil service post and taking up another job so it's not yet cut and dried.

Glad the adults are in charge.
When someone does something that is really collosally stupid, you do sometimes have to ask yourself whether they (or, indeed anyone) could really be that stupid, or whether there's some other darker reason.

Sirkier and his team must have known this would be the reaction.

Maybe they thought this was as good a time as any to announce it?

He must really rate Sue Gray to give her this position.

Taking a break from Twitter atm but sure his very much non-cultish fan boys and girls will be busy explaining why this is actually a genius move and an example of the kind of 5d chess grown up politics is all about, rather than being an absolutely needless self-own.

So why has he done it? What’s the benefit, especially with this timing.

It's possible that Sue Gray is really good at what she does and he had to have her in his team, he knew what the reception to such a decision would be and they've announced it now whilst all the Hancock Whatsapp/Rishi Brexit stuff is dominating the news...

That or he's clueless.

He just needs to announce Isabel Oakeshott as his Comms Advisor now and it's a full house.

This smacks of smoke & mirrors from the Tory Party, to howl over a totally unjustified squabble to divert attention from their: incompetence, corruption, dual values, cronyism, favouritism, sheer greed etc. The fact that so many Orient fans have nibbled on the bait, is worrying. I hope they don't mirror the general public. There are greater things to worry about right now. Nothing to see here.

The police f*cking fined Johnson. Are they going to start pushing the idea that the met is one big labour deep state cell?

Still seems a dumb decision from Labour, both because there's still a chance they'll be up against Johnson in 2024 and because people absolutely hate the rotating door of political appointments/ general members club vibes that Westminster has. Picking possibly the one civil servant the average person would know the name of will sound like your typical politics as usual.

Then again, average voter probably doesn't a give a toss who the Labour chief of staff is.

The official line is definitely shifting, and this really should have been anticipated. Any avoidance to answer what should be a straightforward question is just going to reinforce the suggestion that the proper procedures have not been followed.
