Ratings v Grimsby
Have I missed the official thread? I can barely remember what I had for breakfast so recalling events of 2 days ago may be a struggle but here goes:
Vigaro 7. Our success is clearly based on our defence. But mostly how we restrict the opposition to no chances whatsoever - it's not as if Laurence has been pulling off one world class save after the other to keep all these clean sheets. However, when he is needed, he's there. I believe that's the 3rd penalty he's kept out this season. Some people were moaning about his distribution hitting touch but that is due to having no central target to hit.
James 5. Ok first half then fell asleep after the break. Rightly subbed.
Sweeney 6. Ok.
Beckles 7. Ok.
Turns 6. Ok. Clearly getting better week by week.
Clay 5. See James.
Idris 6. Ok.
Theo 6. Ok, just about.
Ruel 6. Ok, had a hand in both goals.
Sads 5. Not ok.
Kelman 6. Great feet for his goal (although the defending was awful), great pressing for the second goal (as he did all game) but he just doesn't have the physical presence to lead the line alone, which makes things very easy for them defensively. Look at how much more subdued our front 3 were playing off of him.
Prats 6. Ok.
Moncs 6. Really nice goal, made it look so easy. I wish he'd keep his gut out of sight.
Thompson 6. Ok.
Richie - called it right with the change in formation to a 5-2-3-1 to get us back in the game.
Grimsby - they were awful playing it out from the back, we turned them over half a dozen times at least and should have made more of those situations before finally capitalising through Moncs.
Grimsby fans - little bit feisty, weren't there? Caught at least four of our players having exchanges with them.
Ref - awful but in equal measure for both sides, no hint of bias, just inadequacy.
Point was a great result in the end, keeps the run going.
(This was from watching the stream only so obviously limited in how much you can take in).

Re: Ratings v Grimsby
Not far off the mark. I love Viggers but his kicking was diabolical on the day - much worse than normal.
You’ve flattered James. He’s been poor for some time now and he almost single-handedly gave them their 2 goals. The 2nd obviously, but for the 1st goal he was nowhere near his man for the through pass that led directly to the goal (mind you Clay should get an assist for his crap pass which went to one of theirs). I wonder if James is happy tbh. He’s gone from arguably being our best player from a season ago to looking disinterested. He was a lot better when he was free to attack down the wing IMO.

Re: Ratings v Grimsby
Two things:
1) Because we have Kelman up front, he cannot play the ball down the middle. He has to hit it towards touch. This is what happens when you don't have a presence up top.
2) Conditions, both pitch and weather. I only watched the stream so don't know how rough it was but Richie has said the pitch was crap in his post match interview, and you could it was raining in the Closer Look video during the pre match warm up.

Re: Ratings v Grimsby
Didn't watch the game on Saturday but it's been pretty obvious all season that James is a right wing back, not a right back. He has a really poor instinct for when to press and vacate his position, and is generally a bit fallible as a defender. He thrived in a wing back system that accounted for that weakness and him getting injured last season was basically when things fell apart. The half yard you he got from deep meant he was pinging in crosses all the time and he had an actual target in Smith to aim for.
He's technically an excellent footballer and has obviously scored some absolute bangers this season, but I don't think he's good enough defensively to play at league 1 as a right back (not that I'm saying that's the level we'll be playing at next season mind).

Yup I know he has to play it to the wings and has been doing so for a long time now. That’s why I said he was much worse than normal.TRUMP Plumbing wrote: ↑Mon Feb 27, 2023 10:23 amTwo things:

The pitch was crap for sure but not sure how that affected Viggers kicking? I still regard Viggers as the best keeper in our league. It wasn’t raining for the majority of the game but it was bleedin’ cold

Fair enough matey (I did say my ratings were done through the medium of tv which isn't the same as being there).BoniO wrote: ↑Mon Feb 27, 2023 10:56 amYup I know he has to play it to the wings and has been doing so for a long time now. Re: Ratings v Grimsby
No probs - it was James who was the main culprit anyway.
But then again, he probably won’t play that badly again this season!

Re: Ratings v Grimsby
Didnt see the game but dont get the ratings. Forwards scored twice, their job, defenders concede 2, not doing their job , yet get 2 ratings of 7.TRUMP Plumbing wrote: ↑Mon Feb 27, 2023 9:59 am Have I missed the official thread? Actually prefer to forget objectivity and give them all 9 for a tough draw
