Do people seriously believe that club owners/managers not only read this message board but take anything said even slightly seriously?

Stunning levels of delusion.

They 100% do.

Thing is about all these things that the big shots say, aren’t ludicrous, out there comments. It’s just people who have a blinkered view or simple pack of knowledge think we are asking for the ridiculous and being negative.

Everyone with half a brain knows what we need. That includes the owners.

Agree with all that but I think the point is the owners/Ling didn't need to read this board to come to the conclusion that we need another midfielder

We have signed Wright, but clearly need an enforcer in midfield. Blind Freddie could see that last year - why is it so hard for the club to not understand it?
Is Blind Freddie playing this year? Where did we get him from and does he play by radar, like a bat?

He's still got 2 years on his contract at White Stick Wanderers & we haven't activated his £250,000 release clause............. Yet

The way that Martin Ling sees the transfer market is that the best bargains tend to be closer to deadline days.
There a couple of reasons this works as when a club higher up the system buys in a striker, for instance, it geneally means that their third striker is relegated to fourth or even fifth choice and wants out. The other reason is that the club having spent out is happy to recoup some money for a player that does not want to stay.

I discussed this with Martin when he was manager and subsequently had a similar conversation with Kent Teague who can see the sense in it. Obviously you cannot build a whole squad this way but to keep enough funds back for a chance of a couple of better players seems sensible.

Are you good friends with Martin and Kent then? I mean, was it over lunch that you had these discussions?

I think we all understand that logic. The better players get snapped up and the trickle down effect means we have a choice from those left over.

Quite interesting but I checked Soccerbase for our transfers during Ling's tenure and it doesn't seem to be the case.

Permanent deals occurring within one week of the season starting or the January transfer window seem very thin on the ground.

Tom Youngs, Paul Connor, Clayton Fortune, Luke Guttridge are those who came in late. Youngs, Connor, Guttridge were January signings.

Clayton Fortune was the only late summer signing (signed 2 August). He is the only one that really fits the criteria of being displaced at a bigger club. Adam Chambers signed even later but seems a different case, he was at the club for pre-season and the contract was after he proved his fitness after a bad injury.

In fact it seems like Lingy liked his business to be done early. For the promotion side in 2005/2006, Garner and Tudor came in on 20 May/27 May.
For the 2007/2008 season where a hugely changed side topped the table, Purches, Melligan, Mkandawire, Terry, Nelson, Thornton all signed by the start of July.

I don't believe there is any advantage to waiting to the end, otherwise everyone would be at it. I also disagree with Ross about being at the back of the queue, I would still say we would be among the higher payers and location is a big draw given there are no other London clubs in League Two.

It makes sense if we are still looking at the likes of Louis Dennis and expect they may become available later in the window.

I spoke to Martin Ling several times on this suject when he was the club manager and briefly at Chelmsford Cathedral on the present situation. As for Kent Teague, he talks to many people at games, he even tweets his intinery so that if you want to talk to him you know where he will be. He is rare in English football that as a directer he wants to know what fans think. Give it a go sometime.
