Not a Single Penny Spent ( so far)
I genuinely believe our club ( The Board )isnt as keen on promotion as we fans are
This transfer window has been "typical Orient". By that i mean cheapskate.
They like to give the impression they are progressive, but its smoke and mirrors, in reality
Three players have been brought in, and have cost the club nowt....a young lad who's not played a league game before, a Rotherham reject, and a guy who hasnt played for a year due to serious injury.
We're top of the league ( till Tuesday), and we shouldnt be bringing in cheapo signings like this. We should be bringing in decent quality players. You dont get promotion with boys, rejects, and sicknotes. Harsh but true.
Hard to take for most fans, but this is true, if we're being really honest.
Remember, so far, a well off club, with about 10 multi millionaires as board members, that are being sponsored by about 30 sponsers, havent spent a single penny in this window, not a single penny!

Re: Not a Single Penny Spent ( so far)
You don’t have to spend money on transfer fees. In fact, in this day and age, at our level. I’d suggest there’s no need to. As an example, I’d rather the £300k we spunked on Moncurs transfer fee would have been better spent on another L1 quality player for 2 seasons (assuming a wage of c£150k per year).
But yea, I do agree we need recruits that will improve our starting XI immediately, not just squad filler.

Good to see you’ve finally nailed your colours to your mast RE: Moncur. Looking forward to reading your convoluted critiques of every element of his performances for the remainder of the season similar to how we have had to endure with Clay and Ling jnr in the recent past.
Well done.
Well done.

Re: Not a Single Penny Spent ( so far)
Bloody hell guys, let’s all get a grip shall we.
This board saved the club from going under. Got us out of the NL. Got RW and signed him to a long term contract.
Got us players like Beckles, Theo, Smyth and re signed Vigs.
We are top of the table and everyone seems to be on the attack.
We would have all taken this position if offered in July. Please can we keep some perspective.

Re: Not a Single Penny Spent ( so far)
We have spent money, just not on transfer fees. I have no idea what the loan arrangements are but I would guess that we are paying some, if not all, of the Rotherham blokes salary. The kid from Brighton I’m not sure and the fella we got on a free will be getting a full salary from us.
Either way, I agree with the sentiment that the board and owners talk a good game but I don’t think put their hands as deeply in their pockets as they would lead us to believe. This is now the third occasion where reluctance to spend properly had impacted us negatively:
1. The whole saga around replacing Justin Edinburgh where we went for the cheap option multiple times (Embleton x 2, Harrold for a bit and then Jobi). I’m also convinced that Carl Fletcher was hired on the cheap. Took way too long to actually hire a proper manager (Jackett).
2. The January transfer window last season. Absolute cack all bought in on loans or free transfers apart from a baffling £80k spent on that Coleman dud.
3. This transfer window. Loans and freebies again.
My suspicion is that those at the top would be satisfied with promotion and are willing to sacrifice doing by winning the league (and relying on finishing 2/3 instead…or even risking the lottery of the play-offs) to save a few quid.
I reckon if we were sitting outside the playoffs money would have been spent. The current situation the owners are looking at it and thinking “I reckon we can get away with not spending much and still be alright”

What a load of bolloxxx. Not a shadow of doubt that RW would be vocal if a realistic level of funds weren’t available. He mentioned yesterday that January is problematic. I find no reason to challenge this.

If the club don’t just get over the line all the goodwill that came with the take over will disappear and season ticket sales will plummet. The club won’t get another chance like this year so the money men need to dig deep and instead of talking the talk they need to walk the walk.Hedmans Header wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 10:17 amThe Reverend wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 10:03 am We have spent money, just not on transfer fees. Re: Not a Single Penny Spent ( so far)
Personally if I were an owner I would spend a bit extra this month to get us where we need to be. The payback of increased income next season would be worth it.
We should be targeting championship players out of contract in the summer, with a view to having them here next season.
A point I think RW mentioned in an interview in December.

Re: Not a Single Penny Spent ( so far)
We all need to get off the clubs back and put all our energy and support into our great club.
3 players have been signed and the window is not over yet, make it 4 with the return of Harry Smith.
I am sure all 4 players will play at some point, key roles between now and the end of the season, add into the mix returning players from suspension/injury, the squad is stronger than it was before the transfer window opened.
Let’s hope we have now had our bad run and we can return to winning ways v Tranmere on Sat.
19 games to go!

Re: Not a Single Penny Spent ( so far)
Unfortunately, as has been alighted to, we have to stick within the FFP rules. But also look towards the future. As RW said, Will Hoskins and Andy Cook are very good league two olayers, but not league one. We need players that fit our system and mental approach, within our pay structure and are available, probably very difficult.

Re: Not a Single Penny Spent ( so far)
In the worse case scenario and we blow this season due to inadequate investment during this window , next season is going to be extremely hard sale to the supporters . Would we be top of League 2 next season at this time with this same opportunity , I doubt it . The danger for the board is there could be a sharp drop in season tickets sales if it's felt there's not enough ambition .The Reverend wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 10:03 am We have spent money, just not on transfer fees. Re: Not a Single Penny Spent ( so far)
I like George a lot. He hasn’t delivered as much as I had expected but even when not performing at his best, he’s still a great L2 footballer. I am happy he is in our squad. Hope that clarifies.Ron Waffle wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 9:40 am Good to see you’ve finally nailed your colours to your mast RE: Moncur. Well done.
My point is with spending £300k on a 30 year old with no resale value for a club of our size is f*cking insane.
I didn’t really rate Coleman from the little we saw of him but at least the concept of paying £80k for a young non-league prospect who can be developed and sold on makes sense.
If we’d waited until George was out of contract, no problem, sign him up. But we’ve just spent the equivalent of a really good new signings wages for 2 years for no reason.

Re: Not a Single Penny Spent ( so far)
Interesting reading some of the comments. I agree that it seems like the board are confident we will be at least top 3 with what we have, with a few loans or cheap contracts. They may well be right and we will have more budget in league one. It’s a risky old game though. If we did fall out of the top 3 (I don’t think we will btw) and fail in the playoffs, the backlash could be devastating to ticket sales, and goodwill to the owners from the fanbase.

Re: Not a Single Penny Spent ( so far)
Maybe I'm biased but personally I wouldn't take the risk . First things first . Give Richie what and who he wants, get promotion and then try and cross whatever bridges we need to next season. The main thing is we would be back in League 1 .Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 12:23 pm Interesting reading some of the comments. So, yesterday Ling was the cheapskate who underspends the budget allocated to him (and 100% to blame for any recruitment issues), and today the Board are cheapskates for not releasing enough funds for us to recruit better players? Okay, got it.

Re: Not a Single Penny Spent ( so far)
The sensible amongst us know it's not Martin Ling's fault because he doesn't own the club or even a board member . He's only an employee . It's down to the board to decide whatever Martin can offer a player . Incidentally I think the club has a great board but they have to decide what they want . I believe we have to go for it.Wally Banter wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 12:37 pm So, yesterday Ling was the cheapskate who underspends the budget allocated to him (and 100% to blame for any recruitment issues), and today the Board are cheapskates for not releasing enough funds for us to recruit better players? PS mine is of course correct, the budget allocated has been sufficient, it’s just been misallocated.

Re: Not a Single Penny Spent ( so far)
While I agree with numbers 2 and 3 there was a reason for number 1. Justin had just passed and the club was all at sea.We needed an insider ( Ross ) to help the players through a most difficult time . However Carl Fletcher was a bad mistake but came about while the club was still in turmoil .The Reverend wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 10:03 am We have spent money, just not on transfer fees.
