STOP. Right now. Harry is an O.

From the 10 or so games I saw last year he is limited. But has an impact coming on later in the game. That is is game these days.

Give the guy an even break.

Apple Wumble wrote: Fri Jul 19, 2019 8:44 pm I think you’re missing the point. He didn’t start games because Bonne and koroma were good but also because his quality and effectiveness is lessened when he starts.

He is good at coming on late, against tired defenders, when he can bully people. When he starts he’s nowhere near as effective.

So being 3rd choice when you’re just an impact sub is fine, not when you need someone to start a game as 3rd choice.
As I have already said, I accept the point that he might not be good enough to start games, especially when behind Bonne and Koroma. The point I'm countering is this idea that he is somehow unable to play more than 15 minutes.

I get that you are saying that his impact lessened when he starts. Firstly I don't think that is true to more than a small extent, and second it doesn't really matter when he won't be starting many games anyway.
Sure he can play more than 15 minutes but whether those minutes will be even remotely effective is where the debate lies. A fan could play 90 minutes won't be much use, should we sign them up too?

As above Harrold coming on for the last 20 to hold the ball up or batter defenders if we need to go route one is a definitely asset. Harrold playing full 90, having to chase around pressing the opposition, running lost causes etc. isn't.

The irony is we're actually praising Harrold in that impact player role. He earned us vital points last season doing that so well. JE saw where he could be used effectively and it worked like a charm.

The issue is we don't have a player to challenge or cover the main pairing, exact same issue as last season but in a higher league with a new, unproven 2 upfront. Somehow Harrold and Alabi are being touted as the solution to that when it's clear they aren't. Simple answer is we need to bring someone in of sufficient quality and fitness to fill that role.

To be fair, I’m not sure anyone is touting Matt Harrold as “ the solution” as you put it. I think the original debate was about whether or not MH was capable of starting a match and putting in a 90 minute stint. Personally I’m sure he is - that doesn’t mean it’s ideal or that we shouldn’t be looking at alternatives that may be out there.

Not as a first choice I agree, but he is quite capable of starting ( and finishing ) a game so in the event of short term injury or suspension he would be perfectly adequate.

Good summation.

Adequate isn't what we should be aiming at. You want people banging on the door to force their way into the starting XI.

Back to the original question - seemingly nothing. I await the arrival of our new Dawson/Chambers/Vincealot with great anticipation though.

Seriously, our recruitment and systems are so poor to be embarrassing.

Do they learn anything from previous years?

Seems we've moved to pulling a couple of rabbits out the hat in January after poor summer recruitment. Granted we've struck gold in recent times with Brophy, JMD, Turley etc. but also means we're short right through the difficult November / December period.

Hopefully Wilkinson was just rested and its nothing serious...otherwise we are already down to Harrold as a starter...

Also, its a big old worry that Brill, McAnuff and Turley haven't played a minute of pre-season between them yet. They were some of our core players at the end of last season.

Yes, so why do they leave it so late?

I am also concerned about cover for Brill.

I’m sure it’s not a deliberate policy! More a consequence of the market and economics. We’re not Man City so the club can’t just buy up anyone it fancies on a whim and there will be numerous other teams competing to sign a limited number of players many of whom are prepared to bide their time whilst their agents pick and choose the offers. It’s just the way things are.
