If you could live forever, would you?

Post by The Reverend »

If immortality were an option, would you opt in?

By immortality I mean that whatever constitutes “you” (i.e. your thoughts, feelings, memories and whatnot) survives forever. It never dies.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that “you” will remain in your current body forever.

Would everlasting existence appeal to you?

Which me? The youthful, energetic but inexperienced me, the not-too-old and not-too-young me or the wiser old git l've become? Who would be around me? Everyone who ever lived?
Would l retain the set of emotions and opinions l have now or....

Interesting philosophical question but too preposterous to fashion an answer.

Tuffers:- " Have you not read your Bible ? Eternal Life in up yonder !! "

I say :- I fear ole chap that one day you are in for one mighty big disappointment. When your numbers up, the light goes & that's it. Unless someone starts thumping your chest. Then with a bit of luck, you are in with a dog's chance for a few more years.

In all the vampire films they seem to hate it - even the ones where they can come out in the day - so I'd probably say no.

In the next Episode of this light hearted excursion into existential hand wringing, we ask: "The Devil? Is he all bad?"

So what would immortality be like if we were not to remain in our current bodies?

All excellent questions.

Which conditions would you want if immortality were to be a viable option for you?

On condition that I could go through the whole night without having my sleep interrupted by the need to empty my bladder.

And that I go back to before I had breasts.

Can't think of anything worse than knowing all this is never going to end. Even the best parties get to that time when you want to go home.

Living forever here on earth, or living forever after my time on this earth is up? I would sincerely hope that life after death would mean many many changes to my body and mind, my environment etc etc. Living the life we now have forever would be totally depressing.

I say :- Read " I will Fear No Evil " by Robert Heinlein. It is quite an amusing read on this topic. It is a bit dated as before transplants became the almost norm.

I also reckon that it would get pretty boring and lonely if you were suspended in space following the eventual destruction of our planet and death of our star. Hanging around in space until the eventual heat death of the Universe. And, for all I know, even that may not bring about the end.

No. We'll never be in the Champions League so why would I want to? Immortality should be for other people's minds to confer once we are gone.

It's already a hard no from me, but the question didn't make clear whether this was immortality for just you, or for everyone ? If just you, then you'd have to watch all your loved ones die before you - like the old boy at the end of The Green Mile - even your loved ones children, grandchildren etc. In such a situation I suppose you could decide simply not to love anyone, so that you won't be upset when you lose them, but what's the point of life without loving others? - that's any life, let alone an infinite one.

If the premise is for everyone to be immortal, then it's gonna get awfy crowded.

Still a hard no, but interested in the terms of the question.

Very well thought out response. Thank you.

I suppose either scenario (only you are immortal or everyone is immortal) have their downsides.

What about a third option: only certain people are immortal

I think I'm with Dunners on this. Once all the light and energy has disappeared from the universe and not a single atom remains intact.... what would you do on a Saturday afternoon?
