I humbly submit that the sooner anyone who believes themself progressive realises that these utter pricks are class tourists rather than people at the vanguard of progressive thought that some people are just too dull to understand, the better

Do the mail or metro or wherever you’ve c&p’d that from now have an issue with public schools?

I suspect they probably don’t in general, but do when it gives them a chance to undermine a movement they’d like to undermine. Which is why we should be wary of centering and looking for ways to justify stupid, tedious playing at protest by people who are actually providing a valuable service to the Mail/metro/wherever, by being exactly the sort of person they like to be able to present as representing climate change movements.

The more protest the better.Sometimes it has to be direct action. To gain public awareness.

I wouldn't worry too much about these kids and their unwitting role in playing into the hands of the anti climate change movement. They have limitless resources to foment division.

Not really sure what the point is re the background of the protestors. All this guff about champagne socialism and middle class activism is tiring. If there were more champagne socialists, the world would be a better place. People with actual power and influence to make life better.

Are people who are born into affluence meant to be right wing dullards for life, just because they were born into affluence - or do they have freedom of choice and thought? I'd rather someone came out of an elite school with good morals and values, than say...a Jacob Rees-Mogg

Is the context of the protest that Truss has talked about issuing new oil licences for exploration in the North Sea.

They have to be arrested for that and thrown in jail .They have a right to free speech and protest but not like that .There are other ways to make their voices heard .

people always say there are other ways, but then never suggest what those ways are. The tories are making even slightly annoying protest illegal.

I do understand people being upset with their methods - climbing ontop of tube trains etc - but we've got to a point that whatever they do - people will dismiss them as virtue signalling luvvies. A few months back people were complaining that theses sorts of protests were impacting working class people going about their daily lives, picking up the kids or going to work. Now people complain that they've gone 'too far' by throwing soup on a protected painting. It's not hurting anyone, it's not preventing people going about their lives.

Their motives and conviction are being questioned, yet they are perfectly well aware that they are likely to be charged. You can virtue signal without running the risk of criminal convictions - so I'm going to assume they are genuine in their passion. People get really annoyed when they see people demonstrating passion, for some reason - is it perhaps because they lack passion in their own life?

If people use power and influence to make life better, absolutely people from all class backgrounds have the right and are welcome to use that power in service of a good cause.

This isn’t that though. This isn’t someone leveraging a position of privilege in order to make a difference in the way that they have the resources to; this is someone doing “outrageous” stunts (within limits - i suspect the knowledge that the painting is behind glass was a factor, can’t be doing anything that might actually get her in REAL trouble) in a way that helps *her own* social credibility amongst peers, and helps right wing media in being a handy reinforcement of what they want the readership to think of climate protesters.
It’s a middle class woman centering herself in protest movement, getting to embody it, but not actually offering anything useful. Again, it’s class tourism. Before yesterday, if you’d been asked to list ways wealthy young people can help fight climate change, would something similar to her actions have made your list?
What’s the process here? Even assuming that her actions yesterday will “raise awareness” that some young people are very angry about climate, can you elaborate on the next step in the plan, on a flowchart, towards “stopping oil”?

Could you please clarify which social grades are allowed to protest and which aren’t? Would make things a lot easier for everyone.

I’m not stopping anyone protesting - just maintaining that *this* is class tourism that won’t make any difference at all, except to validate the idea that protest is by attention seeking by idiots

This would be a great point if not for the fact that if the idea is “raising awareness”, surely the desired outcome is “the usual suspects” changing their position slightly, rather than people already on board with the idea that action needs to be taken to mitigate climate change slapping each other on the back for triggering the gammons?

Posh kids dont care that it costs you £100+ to fill up your car or if your nan cant have the heating on. If oil really stopped overnight, we'd all be f*cked.

No real solutions or ideas from the hippies, just a stunt.

There is a kernel of truth to this. It takes some balls for a normal working class kid to pull a stunt like this, knowing your going to struggle to find work thereafter. Maybe that’s why it’s easier for these poshos who don’t have to worry about such consequences?
