Should we expect an austerity budget on Halloween?

What’s the angle for the markets? There must be a reason, and a concerted effort to make this happen so someone eventually gains. Rich people are crafty.

It strikes me that our economy is being influenced by a bunch of gamblers and bookies, who seems to be making a fair packet out of speculating while causing real misery to real people. Can't we just find these people and put a stop to it all?

So to borrow money, the govt has to pay whatever the market says is a fair rate?

Yes.

The "market" in this instance is merely taking a guess at the prospects for the UK economy. And they've guessed we're f*cked.

We're entering into a death spiral. The more the BoE and UK Treasury try and intervene now to reassure markets, the more it reinforces market sentiment that we've lost control, which further erodes confidence. And the mortgage rate/energy/household debt/demographic etc crises haven't even hit yet.

It's not about losing control. It's planned. The BofE just don't think it's in the national interest to do it.

The incompetence of these the Tories is beyond words. Their actions are close to treason imo.

Why do you put it down to incompetence?

Fair point - I’ll side with treason 100%.

Is this the moment? Are the capitalists about to reveal their true nature to the masses, and the workers rise up and seize the means of production and distribution?

Facetious. You won't be so glib when your mortgage doubles overnight and you have to sell one of your overseas possessions to make ends meet.

The true nature of the capitalists has never been more obvious than with this present intensification of the class war by them. They have taken the path of free market worship and purity to a zealatory new level.

Unfortunately, the response of workers isn't always revolutionary. Most of what is going on now with strikes is defensive and aimed at protecting jobs, wages etc. There is no political consciousness yet outside sporadic "organisations" like Enough is Enough.

The political "leadership" offered by Captain Charisma from the party who they expect to represent workers interests is lamentable because they are too busy sucking up to the ruling class trying to gain their trust to get a go at being in "power"

Fair enough. But I win, because I paid down my UK mortgage during the good times, and overseas mortgages are on low fixed rates for the entire duration of the term (bless the French).

Off.

But fortunate that I bought long before prices went stupid. And yes, I'd be more than happy to see prices slump as I have kids.

Apparently the BoE is already privately briefing fund managers that this deadline may be flexible. Proper sh*tshow.
