Bids rejected.

Post by Mstevens1959 »

Just found out bids of 100k from Gillingham and Walsall have been rejected for Smith. Apparently they were before the Portugal trip

Coleman to Bromley (loan) rumoured too.

Absolutely . I’m extremely pleased with the club turning these bids down . Harry Smith is an important member of our squad and we’re going to need him if we want to get promotion. Edit , Not surprised to hear Coleman could go out on loan to Bromley .

100k for Smith? You’re kidding? Geezer scored a few last year but he had a few injuries, was lumbering at the best of times and didn’t score after about January. Also doesn’t fit Richie’s style. Massive cock up if we turned down that amount of money for him.

For whatever reason Kenny changed our style of play after our home defeat to Harrogate and then we didn’t get the best out of him . I’m sure Richie will. With a full strength team I think Harry will flourish

With a full strength team Harry is going to make a few sun appearances at best.

Be interested to see what RW does with Smith as you wouldn't expect to see him pressing from the front, though I do vaguely remember Richie saying they wanted to get more out of him in that regard.

There’s no reason he can’t press. Richie talked about him having to adapt, I’m sure they’ve been working on his fitness.

Glad we kept hold of him too.

Been some Interest in Harry Smith but if he goes we will buy another striker.
Will be interesting to see if Smith gets on the plane to Portugal. I expect him to but its far from certain.
There has been a little bit of interest in Smith Gillingham we’re one to enquire a couple of weeks ago and I believe there was another club who asked the question.

As much as Smith won't be first choice, he's a great asset to have when we need to mix things up. I'd only let him go if we have a similar type of player in mind as a replacement.

Well we would have had 100k to get a replacement…

I guess time will tell if it was the right choice

We didn’t just drop like a stone last season because Jackett became a bad manager overnight. Players must take some of the blame. Smith walked around totally disinterested and for 100 k I would have snapped their hands off.

He is also our best defender at corners and free kicks. Hope he stays.

My guess is I still believe something happened at the training ground . I can understand a teams losing streak but to only score two goals in twelve games suggests to me our problems were more than what was on the pitch .

Yeah he did and so did a fair few others.

Of course Jacket didn’t become a bad manager but he and Gallen lost control and couldn’t get it back. They were obviously affected by injuries but there were a few decisions that would have upset the group - playing Pratley deep as a ‘6’, playing Hector too far forward as an ‘8’, the banishing of Wood for no reason, playing Theo as a left back, even Smith himself was out of favour for a little while as I recall.

I was on of Smiths biggest critics at the start of the season - whilst everyone else was fawning over him, I said we should be playing Drinnan down the middle - but I’m totally happy having him here as back up.

Proven goalscorer, seems a good lad too, his height alone is an asset but he's not too shabby with his feet either.
Definitely pleased to have turned down 100k, it's not that much for a striker who offers a completely different type of threat.
Hope his attitude doesn't drop if he's not always in the starting XI.

I reckon he'll get plenty of game time. Drinnan is going to be charged with running his arse off so will regularly be spent before 90 minutes are up. And with how short we are in other positions, can see Aaron having to go out wide and Smith starting games as well.

Smith is similar to loss of strikers we’ve had in the past. I quiet like him actually but 100k is a lot for a bit of a journeyman target man at this level. Whatever, it’s not my money so I’m glad we still have him but feel like it’s a mistake on the clubs part.

there are not many journeyman target players, playing in average sides, that manage 15 goals in a season. Think you are being a bit harsh with that tag.

I agree but we need all the forwards at the moment let’s all see how many he scores this season and then we can make a judgment on if it was a good or bad idea not taking the 100. grand

Shows you how well the owners have done coming in it’s not worth getting a squad to get promoted and then sell our best players well done

When it comes down to modern day transfer fees, 100K is peanuts nowadays and of course we dont know how much transfer fee the Os paid for him when we got him from Northampton Town. I say keep him and see how he gets on this season playing under RW.
