Sid,
The bloke wasn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but he was spot on with this.
We have been on a race to the bottom ever since.

Full of ‘interesting ‘ characters in my limited experience, eye opener, especially in the manufacturing process. Though to be honest before I got too close to this our manufacturing facility was shipped overseas for cost reduction reason. Not the raw material cost either. Make of that what you will.

Plenty of interesting Characters Doh.
Ive known a few people who have moved factories
Out to china becuase the end product was cheaper there
than the raw material was here , so while it makes sense as a buisness
It affects industry here .

Just got to look at what amazon & internet shopping has done to the
high street & the Economy here , all well & good to save money on your latest
T-shirt or trainers or book etc , but with no retail there is all the job losses to deal with.

Not just in the retail sector , the delivery drivers , the companies who
produce the packaging for large retail transfers of stock etc.

Theres no wrong or right about it as its free trade & the internet will always win
but sooner or later a tipping point occurs where everything changes.

Imagine maybe in 10 or 15 years years when you no longer buy your car from a dealership
or your foodstuffs from supermarkets but buy direct from manufacturers , farm co -operatives etc ..

Interesting times .

I have a massive problem with UK job losses when jobs are moved overseas. Upsets me, especially when it affects friends and colleagues. But it’s the pressure to reduce prices, a pair of jeans for £8 in ASDA. Unbelievable when you consider the cut each organisation gets enroute. It reflects too labour costs. Profit is in volume. Peoples cheap clothes is another persons lost job or low pay.

Can’t see it getting better either. On the high street or internet price is king. Ethics cost money and I’m not too sure people want to foot the bill.

I met Gerry many times. Funny guy.

He blamed a colleague for the tat joke. According to Gerry he showed him the speech he was going to give and the colleague said it needed some humour and he therefore included the now infamous joke. The rest is history.

I met him a dozen times or so , got on quite well with him
As he was opening 1 of many new shops .
He was being very serious about his new shop sign , & called me out to give an opinion .
I made some random 1 liner comment & he burst out laughing in front of half a dozen of his underlings .

Whenever he was about hed take 3 or 4 of us out for food afterwards.

The comment he made happened a good 6 or 7 years before the chain went down hill.
He used to tell it every year at the agm for management.

I always thought he was a decent chappie .

As it happens Thor its not just the EU

America has the same sort of quotas in pla e on size for loads of different fish.

Every responsible country has some sort of fishing quotas in place.

Trouble is still laying huge nets that swallow up everything , regardless of net gauge .

The only way to do stuff is to limit the size of trawlers & that is a long way from happening.

Plus also the size of the nets is an issue as plenty of fish that are still growing die needlessly.
