Petrol Prices

Yesterday I drive 200 miles from Yorkshire to home, mainly along the A1.
I noticed Petrol prices in all garages, and the amount of difference was amazing.
The most expensive was 191.9p in a garage near Colsterworth, and the least expensive was 173.7, in a garage near Great Ponton, Linc's.
It has been my opinion for a long time, we're being ripped off, and these prices enhance my view.
If the cheaper garage can sell Petrol for 173.7, and still make a profit, the most expensive garages are ripping us off daily.
I'm surprised the aa, and the rac, are not speaking out.
It seems these garages have free reign to charge us whatever they want.

There are 3 petrol stations within a mile of me, and they can differ by as much 15 p per litre. And one has diesel cheaper than unleaded which baffles me

Saw a station off the M25 yesterday at 199.9p a litre. Are wholesale prices volatile?

Guess who gains the most from higher petrol prices?

The government takes 48% in VAT and fuel duty. Similar to energy bills, where there is a green tax of 25.5% and VAT at 5%.

With petrol prices they should use a sliding scale to keep prices more even. I.e. say 120 is deemed as normal, then government reduces it take when higher and increases when lower.

As for energy bills, just get rid of the 30.5% tax and end the price cap. Then we will start to have some competition for business. Oh I almost forgot this government does not like the small guys, hence the price cap and the 26 companies that went bust. How many left? I counted 17, but some are tiny.

Diesel at service stations seems to have been pegged at 199.9 for the last couple of weeks, obviously the signs aren't set yet to go above £2, although I'm sure they'll work it out fairly soon.

Still don't think it is really that expensive though, even with a car with shockingly bad mpg it's more often than not way cheaper than public transport for longish journeys, especially anywhere where a taxi would be needed at the other end ot hasnt been planned two years in advance.

In general I drive more slowly now, 65 on a motorway makes a massive difference. I'm more likely to walk to the shops or hop on a bus these days rather than taking the lazy option of jumping in the car but it could probably double from where it is now before I'd seriously consider getting rid and going hybrid or electric.

Given the need to cut the use of fossil fuels we should have prices that hurt enough to drive change, although
i'd prefer it alongside massive investment in renewables, public transport and supporting working from home.

There is a.tfl scheme if you have to use.2 or 3 busses to.complete a trip in an hour you are only
Charged once & you dont have to sign up for it . Pretty amazing to be honest

I see the government is looking at a name and shame the rip off merchants, but until then, the cheapest petrol i have found, is to be had in Sainsburys

Someone is making out like a bandit on petrol. Brent is the same price as it was 10 years ago when petrol was about 1.30GBP in the UK. I appreciate there's some extra cost and tax, but someone is making huge profits.

Adz - With oil being priced in dollars you have to factor in the comparison exchange rates. Ten years ago it was 1.58 to the pound, yesterday it was 1.25.

I guess some people just don't have the money so have to resort to this.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but many years ago diesel used to be a lot cheaper than petrol,
now it's 6p to 8p dearer than petrol. How did that happen?

I think it’s a combination of all the above.

So why arent the petrol companies being prosecuted for keeping prices high? Isnt it price fixing or something?
