We mainly played one CDM (was Hector) with two ahead of him.

We haven’t got anyone to play that role yet.

Actually , that's a good team with more than enough talent to win an automatic promotion spot . Of course that's in an ideal world where players didn't get injured , tired or suspended.

Not with Clay as the holding CM, picking the ball up off the back 4.

He isn’t going to play as a holding midfielder

I know that, but that’s where he was in the proposed team.

We didn't line up like that under Wellens as far as I remember. It was two deeper midfielders playing behind Smyth as a no.10 and then two wingers who can cut in onto their stronger foot. Moncur's goal record suggests he'll be playing further forward than any of the central midfielders we had last season but unless Coleman or Brown is loaned out, I'd be surprised if we signed another player in that position considering we have 5 players there still.

We need 3 players if we are going to challenge for title and auto promotion.
CM to play alongside Moncur in starting 11
RW out and out forward thinking winger like Theo is on left
ST No.9 - goalscorer
Get them 3 the title is ours!

But we did. Pratley would drop deep into the full back positions to retrieve the ball alongside Hector (or whoever), with the full backs pushed right up, but he’d then get up to join Smyth, and get back again when we lost the ball.

There are three distinct positions in midfield, Richie explained in one of his interviews. We have Moncur and Smyth in the forward role, Pratley and Clay linking the two, then Coleman and Brown holding. One of these needs to go, the other needs to be back up for TBC.

I agree except we’ll be needing more of a left wing, and theo played rw under wellens and said it’s his favoured position, and as good of a job ruel done at lw it will be good to get some depth. For me the team i would play is.

Vigs

James
Beckles
Ogie
Wood/Georgiou if that’s the position he’s been bought to play in

Clay/Brown
New CM

Archibald
Moncur
Smyth

Drinan

This will all depend on where wellens sees moncur starting and whether or not he is capable of playing in a 2 in midfield. If that’s the case we will definitely need to bring in more of a tough tackling cm, with smyth coming back into the 10 position he played last year and ruel starting out on the left.

Spot on with regards to the midfield. RW said previously he doesn't see Pratley as a holding midfielder. We have to do better than Colebrown for that starting spot for it not to be a weak link when you look at the quality in the rest of the XI.

Smyth is an interesting one as much of his threat has come from wider when we saw him at tail end of last season. I see him more as equivalent to Archibald rather than Moncur, hence would like to see two CMs come in. Probably wishful thinking and it may be more like

Tbc / Coleman
Pratley / Clay
Moncur / Brown

My XI as it stands in 4-2-3-1...

It had Moncur and Clay playing together in a 2. A player picking the ball up from defence would be playing behind them

It doesn’t work like that anymore.

We play with a midfield 3.
