There are trams running through there though
I say :- I have in front of me the Official Isle of Man Railways Brochure. In it, it describes the "Manx Electric Railway & Snaefell Mountain Railway; not tramways!!! Geoff Marshall of " All the Stations " fame, added all the stations of the Manx Electric Railway, when he & Vicki turned their attention to the Isle of Man. I grant you that they look like trams, but who am I to argue. Long Live Railway Buffs.

Re: RMT Strike
Train drivers' pay is always wheeled out as a distraction and division tactic. Seeing who latches onto it is a useful indicator of the complicit and/or thick.

Re: RMT Strike
I had an argument yesterday with a Nurse at Springfield hospital while I was in visiting my mum after her hip operation. Smashing lady but she piled straight in with "do you know how much these drivers get paid? - much more than me!" and so on. I pointed out that it was also about cleaners, station staff etc, and not just about pay. She did, eventually, agree that the government and their lickspittles in the press pitting workers against each other was not really in any workers' interests.

I trust you have also sent Dunners a personal message advising him that not many train drivers are in the RMT. The vast majority are members of ASLEF.StillSpike wrote: ↑Tue Jun 21, 2022 9:17 amI had an argument yesterday with a Nurse at Springfield hospital while I was in visiting my mum after her hip operation. Victory to the RMT and your mum.

Average wage for a full time employee, in the UK, in 2020 was £38,600pa. So two of the above roles are below average (and that's based on 2020 figures) - data from ONS.George M wrote: ↑Tue Jun 21, 2022 10:36 amRail travel assistants - £33,310 - includes ticket collectors, guards and information staff

Re: RMT Strike
I work on the platform, earn approx £30,000 p.a. at a main line station. This includes bank holidays, Sundays still overtime.
Money OK, there is overtime if you want it. Dispute is not about pay.
We know jobs will go , particularly ticket office. Platform staff as well.
My company offered voluntary redudancy last year, overwhelmed by the response, myself included.
I was refused, like quite a few other's. There is no compromise in this despute, it will last a while yet.
I think the dispute is politically motivated by the RMT assisted by the TUC, like we saw in the 70's.

Re: RMT Strike
Wasn't there some sort of democratic vote by the members in favour of taking industrial action to protect pay, jobs and conditions? Not seeing much politics in basic trade union demands.henry wrote: ↑Tue Jun 21, 2022 11:05 am I work on the platform, earn approx £30,000 p.a. at a main line station. Re: RMT Strike
I'm loving the line of attack being adopted by Tory ministers and MPs this morning, which is to blame Labour for the strikes. Yes, Labour, the party who has not been in government for 12 years. But then I guess that, given how thick many people are, it just may work.

Indeed. And this MB is no exception.
As stated elsewhere, Train Drivers are mainly members of Aslef.

Might not be the same going home Pammy. I think there's a separate strike on GA trains Thursday? Sure I read that somewhere.Currywurst and Chips wrote: ↑Tue Jun 21, 2022 11:22 am Trains every 20-25 mins from my station, my train was no busier than usual.

Re: RMT Strike
The greed of the rail unions never ceases to amaze me. The median salary of rail workers is £44,000, 70 per cent above the average yet still they bully for more.
And salaries are only half the story. According to an article by Guy Adams in the Daily Mail (the newspaper so loved by the liberal left metropolitan elite) a little-known industry perk known as a ‘walking allowance’ says that any member of railway staff entitled to a specified break must be given extra time off to cover the process of strolling to and from their mess room. And those times are negotiated by the shop stewards of their militant trade unions.
Even more bizarre is that some railway staff benefit from a rule that allows them to restart a scheduled break completely if they happen to bump into a manager who says ‘Hello’.
As the 80s comedian Jimmy Cricket used to say “and there’s more”. Reading the full article here https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... gates.html will not cause you to self-immolate and may open your eyes to the privilege and advantage Mick Lynch and his crew have secured for the union members.
I worked in Fleet Street when Lord Matthews took on the unions over their outrageous ‘Spanish Customs’ that newspaper proprietors had always kowtowed to when they threatened to strike because “you can’t sell yesterday’s paper”. His answer. Close the newspapers and sack them all. That was the beginning of the end of union power and dominance in Fleet Street and the outbreak of common sense and fair play.

Re: RMT Strike
There’s nothing bizarre about taking into account that if it takes workers several minutes to get to their break room, they’re not getting their full break. And anyone with a boss, but who doesn’t see the reason to deincentivise bosses interrupting breaks must have a very good boss

Re: RMT Strike
Where's that "median salary" of £44K come from? I'm betting that there are many more of the "below average paid" workers within the industry. I look forward to you providing a valid source for that figure.
Re: RMT Strike
A rest break is an uninterrupted period during which work should not be undertaken. By what stretch of the imagination is walking to the mess room considered to be still part of work? If you’re away from your work station (or wherever you perform your duties) and not required or expected to perform work duties, you’re on your break. Simples!
And if you honestly believe that a manager saying ‘Hello’ is an interruption to a break and the clock should then be reset to zero, you are a symptom of the problem, not the cure
